  1. Just got my first DVD burner (a NEC ND-3500A) and I'm looking for some quality media for it. What is the general opinion of Verbatim DataLifePlus? How does it compare to the popular brands I see talked about like Ritek, Prodisc, Taiyo Yuden? Primary use will be DVD backup. PC data backup too.

Verbatim DataLifePlus in the 5 pack - pastel color format usually are Taiyo Yuden discs....however the spindle pack ones are not. I've read in several places here on this message board that the spindle packs are still quite good.

Stay clear of the CMC produced ones - I had 7 out of a 25 spindle of 2.4x +R not even be recognised by my burner.

Up until then I had 100% success with their MCC produced disks. Since I got burned, I moved to TDK with no problems and recently bought some Philips 8x +R which I'm evaluating at the moment.

    I bought a 50 pack of Verbatim 8X at Sam's for
    $30. They're MCC. I've burned 35 with absolutely
    no problems.

From my experience, the Verbatim Data Life Plus are excellent disks. I've used lots of the +R 4x ones on my old Sony 530A. I cannot remember a bad burn that was not my fault. Lately, I've been using both the 4x and 8x +Rs on my new Pioneer 108. The 8x burn at 12x with no problems. The ones I have are MCC media code and they're the best disks I've used.

I recently finally got some TY 8x +R media and it is probably better than the Verbatim, but it's hard to tell. (If you have 2 things that are by all indications perfect, how do you tell which one is better?) I've had no trouble whatsover with either. I have had problems though with cheaper media (usually CMC).

You won't be diappointed with the Data Life Plus disks.

  7. Thanks for the response; much appreciated. One other question for you all. Do any of you know if the difference between 94854 and 94971 is that 94854 is printable all the way to the hub and 94971 is not? Same with 94495 and 94816. Any of you have these and can tell? One can't really make a determination from the pics at the Verbatim web site. I've sent a mail to Verbatim but no reply yet.

  9. This is what the folks at Verbatim had to say:
The 94971 has a clear hub area with the Verbatim logo in small print. The 95854 can be printed to the hub.

I don't think Verbatim uses CMC media codes anymore. Pretty much any recent Verbatim DVD media you buy will be MCC, but most likely made in Taiwan (which means they actually are made by CMC, but with MCC dye and stampers).

How can you tell if they are MCC or CMC when purchasing?
