    Firefox vs Microsoft

    Blake Ross

p2pnet.net News:- "Nov. 9: the web is ours."

So says Blake Ross, http://blakeross.com/ one of the guys who are starting to make Microsoft's Bill Gates extremely uncomfortable.

That's the date of the release of Firefox V1.0, the browser that's slowly but surely disolving Internet Explorer's lead as Browser King. Britain's Ben Goodger is lead developer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Goodger

The Spread Firefox campaign has taken off with the download count currently standing at 6,073,979.

Corporate interests are able to exert iron control offline, but they have to face the competition online, with all that implies.

And they're not doing well, the Big Music cartel's losing battle with p2p file sharers being a prime example.

The ability to communicate knowledge is power and the Corporate Community's communication skills don't even nearly hack it online where they can't control what's being said, or who's saying it.

As a Business 2.0 story puts it, "Blake Ross is lounging at his parents' Florida Keys condo, thinking ahead to his first day back at Stanford. His goal for his sophomore year: nothing less than to 'take back the Web' from Microsoft (MSFT)."

Not at all incidentally, Firefox is, "fast becoming the browser of choice for anyone fed up with all the nasty things polluting the Web (pop-ups and viruses and spyware, oh my!)," the story says, going on:

"Google is rumored to be building its own browser based on the Firefox framework, and entrepreneurs are churning out hundreds of microprograms for it."

A minister in Kentucky is even exhorting his flock to switch to Firefox because it blocks those pesky Viagra ads, says Business 2.0.

    And then there's Opera .......

    Hi All,

Just a minor word of warning from personal experience - if you're running PC-Cillin (200x) (2004 is the latest at time of writing) as your firewall and virus protection then installing Firefox (I installed v1.0 PR) causes a conflict meaning that either pccguide.exe or pop3trap.exe run anywhere between 50 and 100% of your CPU constantly.

    These links:

    cpu usage 100%

...will be of interest. Sadly, on the second one, the poster doesn't go into detail.

I've yet to resolve my issue as I want to clean the registry / delete files rather than tamper with files.

UPDATE: Problem solved! Details here... As I prefer virus protection over an enhanced browser, I've ditched Firefox and am left with IE6. Yeah, yeah - I know - get different virus protection...

2nd UPDATE: I've since read that just deleting the registry.dat file may be all that's required. Though the effect of this on Firefox and / or any other Mozilla products is uncertain. I've not tried it, so can't comment.

I hope that saves people from stumbling across this problem.

Other than that, I use Firefox at work and think it's pretty good.
There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

    Carpe diem.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room.
