  1. Hello again, my friends.

My cousin wants me to back up a few of his little girl's DVDs, because she tends to scratch them up when she handles/watches them. So far, I haven't had any problems. Until I tried to backup "A Cinderella Story."

I load it into DVD Decrypter, and set it to rip all the files. However, it gets to the 1_1 VOB (beginning of the movie), and only rips a small portion before stalling. It gives me errors, and it just stalls there. The other files seem to rip fine, though, it's just that one VOB.

I have also tried SmartRipper, and I get the same problem. I am unsure of the Version of SmartRipper, but I know that I am running DVD Decrypter version 3.1.1.0.

The disc was just purchased this week and is brand new. No scratches, fingerprints, marks, etc. Usually, when I have a problem like this, it is due to disc damage. The movie plays fine, however, both on a standalone player and my computer DVD drive.

Any ideas on how I can rip this disc and help out my cousin?

    Thanks,
    J

  3. I was unaware that DVDShrink could rip DVDs. I'll give it a try and post the results later. Thanks, Kevin.

It might just be me, but from the little information given it sounds like it might be intentional mastering errors, as described in great length in this thread. Try updating to the latest DVDDecrypter and try ripping again, or update to the latest DVDShrink as Yoda prescribes.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. Just tried DVDShrink (older version I had on the computer, possibly the first version of the program) and it stops on the same spot.

Will try updated DVDDecrypter later tonight.

    Thanks for the help.

  7. Same results with newest version of DVDDecrypter.

How do I tell it to ignore mastering errors? The only thing I see in the settings about mastering errors is "detect mastering errors," and it is currently unchecked.

Tell it to ignore read errors

Check the box that states detect mastering errors.

Tried this, and still no cigar.

Also, I was able to find a friend who has the DVD. Still won't let me rip.

Sabro, what do you mean by "DVD Shrink + Alcohol 120% burn on ISO = Perfect" ?

DVD Shrink wouldn't work for me when I tried to rip, either, unfortunately.

I know that there is some way to fix this problem, but it's getting a little frustrating. Maybe I should just tell my cousin that this one disc isn't worth the trouble to backup.

Any more suggestions before I throw in the towel?

    -J

P.S. I want to thank everyone who helped out with suggestions. I really appreciate your time and help.

  11. I used DVD Shrink 3.2 to rip to an ISO file instread of using DVD Decryptor or Nero to burn. Then used Alcohol 120% to burn the ISO file to DVD.

Have always used this approach and never a coaster yet or a problem ripping.

  12. is the dvd widescreen? if it is, try the fullscreen version...had trouble with TAKING LIVES..could not backup the director's cut widescreen version..fullscreen version of same worked like a charm..good luck....

  13. OK, if I try DVD Shrink again to rip the disc into an ISO file, won't it be too large to fit on DVD-R? I believe the total disc size is about 6.5 GB, with the movie being about 5 GB.

Kamarob2, the disc is only widescreen. Good idea, though.

  14. Finally managed to rip the DVD! I took some of the suggestions, and searched the forums with them.

Found something similar to my problem: Apparently a few people had problems ripping a VOB from Star Wars: A New Hope. One person suggested doing the following:

Using DVDDecrypter, ignoring read errors, and setting read retries to zero. I did this, and also checked "Detect Mastering Errors." Took an extra 20 minutes to rip, but it worked! Eventually, when the ripping hit a snag, it took about 10 minutes, but it would chug along again for another few minutes, until it hit the second and final snag.

Thanks for the help! You guys rock!

  16. Actually, the one missing piece of the puzzle was to set "Reading Retries Allowed" to zero. Otherwise, yeah, it's pretty much what was suggested.

I ended up with about 96 read errors, but I finally got that disc ripped, though.

Again, a million thanks to everybody!

Oh, I definitely agree with you there. I made sure to change the settings back to normal after I finished. The last thing I need is a computer problem.
