I am getting a lite on 812s as a gift now I currently own a lite on 851s ,now I have read that there is a flash that can change that unit from a single layer to a dual layer burner ,now my question is, is it a good idea to do the flash on the drive and if I do how do I go about flashing the drive? I mean is there a guide in laymen terms that is easy to understand for this process step by step, because I have been burning dvd backups for almost 2 years but I have never flashed firmware on a drive. And thanks in advance for any info on this matter.

Dont' flash it unless you really need it. Double layer disks are so expensive that you probably won't be using any for quite a while. There is always a risk that something could screw up during the flashing process and hacked software can be a problem. It's not worth the effort if you're not going to be using it.

Most firmware will come with the instructions for flashing your particular drive.

Thank you tom for your help, and I was just wondering about the flshing but I wasn't going to do it unless ,1 the media drops in price,2 that it would be worth the trouble. But I am very happy with my first lite on and I wanted to get an 8x drive because my dvd rom which I was using to rip my dvds died a slow death.

I flashed my SOHW-812s to SOHW-832s. I found it simple & I've been able to burn all 4x media I've encountered at 8x consistently.
