  1. If a stand-alone DVD player will not read a successfully burned DVD, does the mean the media is not up to par or have I done something wrong?

I used +R Ritek R03 and -R Ritek G04. Both burned at 4x. I have Herrie's 2.17 FW to enable bitsetting on +R, which I was hoping would increase compatibility. When I put both DVDs into my Sony CAV770, it spins the disc for almost a minute then says it can't read it. I used Nero to burn the resulting AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS files I obtained from DVDShrink.

The DVDs play fine on my PC, unfortunately I don't have access to another stand-alone to test with. Would my best bet be to try and obtain some better media? Thanks for any help.

  3. Sonys are indeed picky. Try burning at 2X.

  4. If you've tried both media formats without success, I'd look elsewhere for your problem. My Sony plays - and + fine (with or without bitsetting). Did you use the DVD-Video interface in Nero? Obviously, the files/data are being written fine....maybe something simple in the DVD file structure is off.

  5. I used Nero 6.3.1.25. I start by running the StartSmart thing, put it in Expert Mode, and click on Burn DVD-Video files. It then shows me the layout on the right with the AUDIO and VIDEO _TS folders, so I go to the directory where my DVD is, drag the AUDIO and VIDEO _TS folders over to the right side and then click burn.

Does it matter if I drag the folders over or should I copy the files to the folders? I don't know what the problem is. In all honesty, my Sony player isn't great, it takes a long time for it to even initialize a retail DVD.

I'll try burning at 2x when I get back from dinner. My girlfriend has a lesser-brand DVD player, I'll try them out in hers as well.

  6. Make sure all the files are in the VIDEO_TS folder. Check 'em out on your girl's player & report the results.

Drag the files from the VIDEO_TS folder created by DVD Shrink and drop into the VIDEO_TS folder in the Nero compilation pane.

I think dragging the folders may have put the .VOB files an extra level deeper than a DVD player expects. Did Nero complain that you were creating a non-compliant DVD before you started to burn?

yeah just highlight all the files you need and drag those file into the red video_ts nero ALREADY has created. thats probably the prob right there. there's a prob if there's a video_ts file in the video_ts file.

Nope, didn't give me a warning or anything, which you would think it would. It just burned as normal. I did check the files after burn and there is only ONE AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folder on the disc. But, it definately could have affected the compliance.

I'll get back to you guys after I do another burn. Thanks again for all of the help.

  10. Great news!! I took the DVDs over to my girlfriend's, who has a Samsung DVD player. The R03 disc wouldn't play at all, however, the G04 disc played perfectly (there was some artifacts in the FBI warnings, but that is negligable).

Now for the great part: on the way home I stopped by Rite-Aid (which is like Walgreens) and picked up a 5 pack of Fujifilm 4x DVD+RW and a 10 pack of 8x DVD+R (the +RW is RICOHJPNW11 and the +R is YUDEN000T02). I reburned Star Wars using both media. I then went back to her place and tried them, both worked flawlessly. So, I held my breath and tried them on my Sony standalone...AND IT WORKED! I have yet to try a slower burn with the RITEK discs, but at least I know my standalone isn't completely lame.

By the way, I burned the 8x Fujifilm at 12x but my NEC 3500A says it can go at 16x. Coolness.

  11. Just an update:

I went ahead and made an ISO of the DVD and burned with DVDDecrypter using the RITEK R03 media @ 4x and that worked in the standalone. It must have been because I didn't copy the files I just dragged the folders to the compilation in Nero.
