  1. Hi a newbie here

I have a RICOH MP5240A and am become extremly frustrated with it, as i can't seem to find any media that works with it.

I got a few different brands...hoping that each one would work, but no luck.

I've looked on this website to see what media is compatible and got some bulkpaq dvd+r x4....this still doesn't work. The problem is insert the media and the DVD+R doesn't respond.

I feel i have wasted a lot of money on DVD+Rs and am wondering if there is anything wrong with my recorder. I have the latest firmware, and the media i got with the recorder worked fine.

    Please HELP!!!! Any appreciated!!!

    thanks
    Alan

What media have you already tried? It would help if we knew if you have tried good-quality media or only the cheap stuff like bulkpaq.

It's a bit disturbing that the recorder doesn't even see the media. Usually even the cheap stuff is recognized by the drive, and only causes problems when you try to burn it. It sounds like it might be a hosed drive.

Try cleaning the laser lens if you haven't already. They make DVD/CD lens cleaning discs and sell them at Walmart, etc. for about ten bucks. An excessively dirty lens can cause this problem.

If its dirty, why would it get dirty so quick? And also it still reads the PHILIPS RW discs that came with the dvd drive.

Grease from mechanism. Sometimes factory assemblers get heavy-handed with the grease gun.

When we bought our Panny E50, the first week or so, every DVD we put in it had grease blobs on the bottom of the disc after removal. Apparently they laid on the grease too heavy on the gears and the operation of opening the drawer flung the grease up.

I didn't return it because I didn't want to run the risk of getting one that didn't have any grease applied It's fine now.

  5. So you are suggesting that the grease causes the dvd drive to read the Philips dvds, but not the Bulkpaq, inifinit or verbatim?? It also reads CDs ok and plays DVD films. Not sure if grease is the problem. But i will look into it. Thanks anyway.
