    OK, my last 'issue'. I hope.
    I'm sure you've heard of this before. I have, but, I'd never experienced it first hand. I have a Sylvania 6719dc all-in-one that I purchased specifically to set next to my Mac and test videos. Up until now I've never had a problem with it losing audio sync while playing a DVD. But, up until now, I'd always used the Apple MPEG-2 encoder to create DVDs.

    So it's the classic case. DVDs work fine on my Macs and my Samsung V2000 but lose sync after a few minutes when playing on the Sylvania. All you have to do is pause/play or rewind/play and it's back in sync....for a little while. Otherwise the DVDs play fine.

    It's not the disc, same thing happens with another brand. The Sylvania never loses sync when playing a straight commercial, DVD2one rip, or Apple MPEG-2 encoded DVD. It only happens when playing a DVD whose video track was encoded with ffmpegX. All the DVDs were created the same way, the only variable is the encoding of the video track. It would appear to be the DVD Player, except for the above.....

    I'm open to suggestions

  2. Try re-muxing and re-authoring with different software, like DVD SP and Sizzle, and check if it does change anything. Post results as well as info about the stream (is it PAL or NTSC, or NTSC FILM with 3:2 pulldown)?

    I guess I could use the ffmpegX Authoring and see what happens, but, the whole reason I'm using ffmpegX is to create low bitrate multi-track DVDs. I really need DVDSP.

    I'm using;
    DVDSP 2.05
    Toast 6.07
    ffmpeg (I've tried I-Frames at 12 or 15 and assorted options)
    m2vs between 1200/1800 kbps, half DVD, 4:3 and 16:9, NTSC 29.97, 2-passes
    AC3s between 112/128 kbps, 2ch, DDS created by A.Pack 1.5.3
    Pioneer 107

    Does seem strange that the Samsung can loop a 6.5 hour DVD overnight and not lose sync

    Edit for source: Mostly AVIs/MOVs, some DVDs and a few FCP DV captures from Sony handycam. Mostly AVIs.

  4. Source being cam or film?

    Mmmmm.
    So, I used Sizzle 0.1 on a track from my last DVD+R. I still have the elementary streams since I just completed the three track DVD. The DVDSP disc plays like the rest, video/audio appears smooth but loses sync by about a couple of tenths of a second over a 5 minute period on the Sylvania.

    The Sizzle disc is entirely different. Within the first 30 seconds the video freezes for a half second, the audio doesn't. It then suffers the freezing around once a minute for the next couple of minutes. Everytime the video freezes the sync is lost. It does seem to stabilize after the first 10 minutes, but still loses sync every few minutes. It's basically unwatchable...on the Sylvania. It plays fine on my Macs and the Samsung.

    So, I ran the first m2v (the original is a 2 file AVI) through ffmpegX with the same settings I used originally. I didn't receive any error messages when I converted the AVIs, I usually don't. This is the first quarter of a 760MB file;

    The errors appeared close to where the video was freezing. I think I can see what's going on here. Question is, how to fix it. That m2v is 70 minutes long and was done with 2-pass encoding. It went through DVDSP/Sizzle without a hiccup. I'm sure the Sylvania is not the only picky player around.

    Just for comparison, I pulled the first VOB off of a recent Apple MPEG2 encoded DVD. This was back before I gave in and conceded that using a high bitrate on a low quaility source was nothing but a waste of space. The file size encoded was about five times as large as the above encode, and only produced a short group of errors right at the very end of the VOB;

  6. Thank you. To complete the report, it would be useful to obtain a similar m2v by using mpeg2enc engine instead of ffmpeg engine, and checking it too on your combo player.

    It just keeps getting better and better....

    First, back to that DVD that I Authored with Sizzle 0.1. I used a Memorex DVD-RW (2x), the same disc I've been using without any trouble for months now. That thing turned out to be a real dud. Close to the half way point the video began getting really bad and was even noticeable on the PM using the 107. You could see the frame rate slow at certain points and the audio would stutter, but amazingly, it kept it's sync using Apple's DVD Player. The Castle Dracula scenes were a total wash with the Video/Audio actually freezing/spitting/spuddering and still amazingly holding sync. Glad I don't use Sizzle.

    New disc.

    I finally ran outta the HP Invert DVD+Rs and finally, late yesterday, got the next shipment oF DVD-Rs. Unfortunately, I didn't get the Ritek G3s I ordered but something that appears to be these;
    https://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?selectmedia=2317#comments
    Great. I'm not happy. Now I have to fire off another letter. Since the reviews were good, and I was outta discs, I went ahead and tried them. They appear to work fine.

    I was expecting these discs and wanted the last 5 DVDs I built on DVD-Rs so I had kept the final Video_TS folders. I burnt them all to the new discs and they play almost identical to the HP and Memorex discs.

    mpeg2enc WTF?

    Now the strange part. I used mpeg2enc set at half DVD on the original first AVI. What I got was something similar to the abortion I got the last time I used it on that demuxed OGM movie. This wasn't an OGM, but a perfectly good AVI.

    The resulting files were totally outta sync with the video track only lasting 59 minutes instead of almost 71 minutes as it should. I'm pretty sure that mpeg2enc is making a 23.98fps track instead of the 29.97fps track I requested. Even though QT claims it's playing at 30fps it can't be. The audio file is the correct 1:10:42 duration, hence the sync problem.

    I'm going to post the entire progress reports to help in identifying the problem. The first report is the AVI->MPEG2 conversion. The second report is the outta sync mpeg conversion using ffmpeg to look for errors. There wasn't any errors...at least not the kind I was looking for. Just a badly outta sync mpg that seems to have the wrong frame rate.

    I need more coffee....

  8. Apparently, you used mpeg2enc with "Decode with mplayer". You should use "Decode with Quicktime" to minimize sync problems with NTSC material.

    Is your source camera, or film?

    Yep, I used the decode with mPlayer. I'm still trying to understand the mpeg2enc results. Apparently it gave me a video track that was encoded at 23.98 and flagged to play at 29.97? The file was an AVI that plays perfectly in everything.

    OK. I had a brainstorm and opened the mpeg2enc encoded mpv in Hexeditor. It was set for 29.97. However, the only framerate that results in the correct length in QT is 25. It was originally 25. I told it to encode at 29.97, just like last time. It also says 29.97 in the progress info. Why did it encode at 25??????
    From above:

    ---------------------------------------------
    I have given up with using the audio from the encodes. Many of them come out 1/2 to one second short at the end. I've found it's easier just to open the original in QT and export as AIFF. Then, doctor that in Peak and toss it to A.Pack. I haven't had a sync problem yet. But there's absolutely nothing I can do with a video track like the one I just received. If I try the 3:2 thing, I get a warning in DVDSP and then the chapter markers do weird things like flashback to a previous frame when the playhead passes the marker. Weird.

    So how do I get mpeg2enc to give me a 29.97fps track at Half D-1? I really don't want to use it. It took almost 4 hours to do that 70 minute track. ffmpeg would have done it in about 70 minutes and given better quaility. I'll probably wait until tonight, around bedtime, if I'm going to run it again 8)
