i am in the process of converting my analog to DV and for now, write them to VCD. obviously, i want to use good quality CD's. anybody out there know which are the best? the worst? you see so many inexpensive ones out there and i'm just wondering if the higher priced ones are much better.

You can't go wrong with Taiyo Yuden.

I've some Sony branded Taiyo Yudens (deep green dye with gold & yellow top) from almost a decade ago that still work fine. They register as 40x writeable.

i just read a very good FAQ about cd-r's in general. some are better than others in quality, but the main thing to do is keep them cool and dark. these are the main things that ruin cd-r's.

That's quite a bit. I see them online all the time for ~$0.30/each. Places like RIMA , NewEgg, and MeritLine.

  14. Does anyone know if DVD+/-R is of better quality than CD-R? Or DVD+/-
disk is more durable and more tolarate to poor storage condition?
Because all CR-R I have seen have the recording layer on one side of
the disk. There is no hard protective layer above the recording layer.
It is easy to get the recording layer damaged. But all DVD+R/-R I have
seen have the recording layer between two hard plastic disks. It seems
that structure of DVD disk provides a much better protection to the
recording layer than CD-R. So can I say DVD+/- is more durable than CD-R?

some of the Verbatim have a layer above the dye (an extra protective layer) ..

cd's are more tolerant of scratches than dvds ..at least on the bottom ..

i could swear i remember reading somewhere that damaging the top part of a cd-r is even worse than scratching the bottom. from what i understand, if you do that, the laser has nothing to reflect off of.
by the way, i just bought the taiyo cd-r's at newegg. 29 bucks for 100. great price for good quality.

they seem good quality -- at least the ones i have used --

i really dont see much of a difference between cdr blanks much anymore ..

hardly anyone makes the thick strong heavy duty blanks you used to find - now all of them seem a bit cheaper but burn fine ..
