  1. I am a bit "out of the loop", but can VCD's be made on any set-top dvd recorders?

  2. Why would you want to make VCDs on a DVD recorder?

  3. Most DVD recorders won't record to CD, but I know that several Liteon models do... (e.g. http://www.liteonit.com/DC/english/lvw_5005/lvw_5005.htm).

There may also be other brands that people here are aware of.

I know that sounds weird - but I have a really expensive Panasonic portable DVD player that will only play commercial DVD's or VCD's - and I've HAD IT with making VCD's on my computer - want an easy way to do it. I don't want to just dump my portable even though I could find a newer one that plays everything.

I believe the KISS recorders where supposed to have this feature (along with 5.1 digital recording!) but, apart from UK reviews of the players everything seems to have gone quiet on the KISS front.

You could record a DVD on a recorder and either play it out using a firewire link (assuming the recorder has an enabled digital video/i-link/firewire out) then re-endcode or just record to a DVD, rip and recode but I noted your comment on not using the PC so that's probably not much help, sorry

  6. I have a used Terapin VCD recorder that I might sell.....pm me.

The Terapin will record standard VCD on CD-R/RW. It's nice since it has no macrovision or copy protection. The picture quality is ok for VCD. I have not used it much it all the past year. The only thing wrong with mine is that our pet rabbits chewed some of the remote buttons!

Have you tried DVDs from a standalone? Try better media, media can make a big difference.

I've gotta agree with samijubal. You should be able to play burned DVDs on any player that will play commercial DVDs. And if you have one that plays VCDs, which is unusual for a DVD player, by all means it should play a DVD-R.

I would focus on getting it to play DVD-Rs instead of throwing in the towel and getting a VCD standalone. You'd be sacrificing so much quality and capacity that way, it'd be a shame.

Start by trying different media. Cheap media drives us nuts when we do everything else right, and it doesn't play. That's most likely the culprit here

NO, well nor usually. yoU can use a computer DVD/CD combo burner. I have panasonic standalone DVD recorder and Terapin VCD recorders. You cna not put a complete movie on a CD, 80 minutes max but DVD is also better quality. The VCD recorder is good quality, at least as good as a VCR. The Terapin also can be used to make digital copy of audio CDs if you use audio CD blanks.

I like my Terapin VCD recorders for some things but use DVD recorders for movies and longer record time on a single disk.

Hm, well I use Verbatim DVD-R, Fujifilm DVD-RW and HPand Verbatim DVD+RW. Do you have suggestions for a DVD-R brand that might work in an older Panasonic portable?

  11. I use Prodisc DVD-Rs which work in everything I've tried them in. I have a 5 year old Panasonic player they work in, it's not a portable though. Discs from a standalone might have a better chance of playing.

Taiyo Yuden TYG01 or TYG02. I had a Panasonic LF-D311 that only liked TY media, and I have a Panasonic DMR-E50 standalone recorder that only likes Taiyo Yuden media. There's something about TY that Panasonic units like, in my limited experience with media

No, not on ANY set-top recorder, but some do.
    I have a Lite-On 5005 that makes VCD's, and does it quite
well. Of course it makes DVD's too, and they look
excellent, but again, you're looking for a machine that
will make a decent VCD, Get a Lite-On.

There are also some svcd / vcd desktop recorders!

Amoisonic has a desktop VCD / SVCD recorder, but I don't rememeber which model.
