I have been using AMD processors for several years, I like them. I'm on a AMD laptop typing this. I think the Athlon chip is a better value for the money.

AMD for me.

What should I get Athlon XP2200+ or a Celeron 2.4 ?
Comparing my 1700xp with 1gig ram and my 2500 Barton 333 FSB with 512mb ram systems I would say most people should be happy with the 1700XP. It does everything just fine, actually great, and power users should be the only ones needing more horse power. I use the 1700XP for everything at home and am happy, I could just as easy bring home the 2500 from the office and swap parts but no need to here.
The 1700 is my main Video box too where I do most my work.
Course at only $96 for the 2500 bartons and system boards not costing any extra either for the 333fsb support might as well get that.
I never build Intells anymore myself, but I do look at them, and on a dollar/power ratio AMD wins everytime. Either AMD costs far less for equal power, or you get far more power for an equal price. Depends which way you look at it, save money or get more power, but AMD wins!
And myself I have never had a bad AMD CPU and been using them since the 486 DX4 100 was a new CPU!
I do pay the extra couple dollars and get the retail versions now though, not only is the warauntee for 3 years you also get the heatsink and fan with it. I use that unless I am going to over clock it alot. -
As a side note on the Ram I mentioned, My daughters 1700xp I built her has either 256 I think, or maybe 512mb, I forgot now, but it does everything my others do also, just not as fast because it has less ram than my 1700 and the cpu is a 266mhz compared to My barton 333fsb which may also have double the ram at 512mb.
In normall use it does not matter at all, they are all equal, only when you hit the really higher power stuff do I start to actually see a difference.
Like rendering animation or re-encoding video. Then Ram is what counts more, and games it's the video card! -
Thanks, I have an AMD XP3200 Barton myself 400 FSB and 512 MB of ram
I also have a Athlon 1.1 Ghz sitting here beside me whould it be worth it to upgraded this Athlon 1.1 Ghz to a 2200 ? -
The new Celeron D with 533 bus and increased cache are getting good reviews. Celeron D seems very close to AMD XP at this point.

It really depends what you want to use it for and the individual. I seldom if ever upgrade a CPU. I have extra systems! I think about updgrading some of them sometimes, but then I think what will I do with the CPU I take out? I have an old pentium 133 at the office people use to surf the net on a lan connection and I store some files on. Only reason I have that one is I traded a printer I did not want for it, and then only because the people needed a printer and could not afford to buy one. I got the short end
The point being though, if it works and does what you want why bother changing it? I could easily replace that 133 with one of my better systems or build another, but it does stuff just fine for what it is used for as is. My 486 DX4 100 AMD is better than that 133 but the systemboard is not PCI, it's a 32bit, so best lan card I could get for it was only a 10mb and that's too slow for moving files at the office or I would use it instead.
For the low cost of CPUs it might be a worthwhile upgrade if you use it for stuff that needs more power, but often it's the ram that make the most difference.

You should look at that also. Alot of these reviews don't figure pricing at all. I look at it often as to how much I want to spend, not the actuall CPU ratings. I decide to spend about $100 for a CPU I get the one with the most kick! That goes for any price range!
Also I still remember the Intell ripoffs of the old days quite well, the SX CPU and the DX Cpu. The SX was a cpu with the math co-proceser disabled and a little cheaper than a full DX and people were getting ripped left and right thinking they were getting a full CPU.
I consider the cellerons to be an SX model, has to be some reason they cost less than a REAL Intell CPU!!! What did they kill in that model this time? Besides the high prices I just don't trust Intell like that! -
Here's a discussion of Celeron D. Don't know about bias, but it seems to be informative. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/celeron-d.html

AMD all the way. That XP2200 will leave a Celeron standing.

I'm running a 2200+ T-Bred. I OC'd it to 2.25GHz after rebuilding my system into a new Aspire case w/ Demon 480W PSU. Much better cooling options than my previous case. Also replaced the crappy factory HSF w/ a *much* better aftermarket! Amazed to see it averaging about 45C even under load! Hell it was running ~54 in the old case at the native speed.
Like a flea circus at a dog show! -
The Celeron is much maligned compared to the P4, but my kids have Celeron 2.6's and compared to my P4 3.0g, whilst obviously slower in some areas, its not that much slower, or not noticeable in other areas IE processing video is about 30% slower, but cant really notice any difference in Doom3.
I have not used an Athlon since my Athlon 1.4gig (1800+, I think was AMD's terminology), which was a lemon, and not indicative of normal AMD stuff, and way underpowered compared to my current intel stuff anyway so cant really comment on the athlon V celeron option -
I buy only AMD. I've had for this AMD 1800+ for almost 2 years know and never had any problems or complaints. I'm waiting til next year and I'll probably get an AMD 64. But I always recommend AMD. I had a an Intel P3, my 1st real computer and it died after 3 months, never again will I buy Intel. It may have been a defective chip but either way it pissed me off. So i won't go to Intel unless AMD goes under :P

I to mainly use AMD
I bought a 333 MHZ, Upgraded it to a 500 Mhz and then took it in for a cleaning and the store messed it up and upgraded it to a Duron 850 and then I had it upgraded to a Athlon 1.1 Ghz and still have it my daughter was using it but I think I'm going to get her something better, I had a iMac 450 DV a few years ago and also a Celeron 900 that I just sold.
and I have a AMD XP3200+ Barton right now I think I'm going to get a XP2200+ or better for my daughter. -
AMD rules.

AMD 2200XP will be well better than a Celeron of that speed (The Celeron really just being a Pentium 4 with slower Front Side Bus and less Cache , although I do hear that the Prescott Celeron is OK) . A 2200XP Athlon would probably actually be faster than a Pentium 4 at 2.4Ghz in terms of Pure Processor calculating speed .
-
Yes, but the AthlonXP performance ratings start to unravel at the higher PR ratings. The Athlon XP 2800 --> 3200 don't really compare with the P4c/Prescotts of that clockspeed.
The Athlon 64 chips compare quite well though.

Yes that's true the 800Mhz P4's are just really fast indeed , I'm much happier with my 3.0C P4 than say a Athlon XP3000 or thereabouts .

i am a believer now, i have been saved. i've seen the amd light. hallujah brothers
as far as your question the xp2200 would whoop on the celeron without a doubt.PhenII 955@3.74 - GA-790XTA-UD4 AM3 - 2x4 Corsair Vengeance@1600 - Radeon 5770 - Corsair 550VX - OCZ Agility 3 90GB WD BLACK 1TB - LiteOn 24x - Win 8 Preview - Logi G110+G500
