    Analog Devices Inc. said it is sampling a high-speed JPEG2000 compression chip suitable for the Digital Cinema Initiative specification. Decoders using the technology are expected to hit the market as early as next spring.

    I'm not up on this initiative. Would the theaters be projecting the image using a technology similar to the front projectors we can buy now? Or are they talking about a completely solid-state technique like a huge LCD panel?

    we use high powered dlp projectors with a type of hdcp encryption connection to a server (sometimes -- supposed to anyway) ..

    quvis and a few others are so firmly entrenched in this market (which is small anyway) - no one will much care for another format .. quvis uses a wavelet compression and is pretty darn good i got tot admit.. i encode a lot for quvis and also for hdtv mpeg2 ... quvis files are a lot lot smaller ..

    also - there are frame servers used in some locations and and also dedicated hdtv servers or off tape.
