hi. i don't know where to post this. sorry.
i am trying to copy the video from my Sony minidv tape to Ulead Video Studio6 editor and edit it from there including still pictures and copy it to a VCD disc and VHS.
what are the things that i would need? like video board? cables? other softwares? what softwares? is there a free trial for the softwares?
    i will appreciate any suggestions.
    thanks a lot.

You need a firewire card, which you mave have recieved with your camera, some transfer software, a firewire cable, and around 13gb hard drive space per hour of video (don't forget to take into account edit space etc.)

I'm assuming you recieved Ulead VS6 with your camera - it should be able to transfer the DV data back and forward to the camera.

    1. Connect camera to firewire card using firewire cable. If you are using Win Me or XP it will detect the camera automatically.

    2. Start up your transfer app. If you want to simply transfer through a simple app, llok at DVIO or WinDV as well.

    3. Edit footage to your heart's content.

    4. For VHS, transfer the final footage back to the DV camera. Connect the DV camera to the AV input of your VHS and tape away.

    5. For VCD, output as VCD compliant Mpeg-1 (Ulead should do this) and burn as a VCD using your favourite burning software.

the way i did it was to convert the edited video to AVI so that i can transfer it back to the minidv and when i did the video is dropping frames and sound, it was like freezing video and the quality of video was not good. what video size should i make so that when i transfer it back to the minidv as an AVI file so that it will not look like a freezing video? is it only AVI file that i can transfer back to the minidv? thanks for your reply.

Remember to shut down all unnecessary programs when doing anything with Video Studio. If this does not help, you can still make a DVD and record it to your miniDV camcorder.

You should always transfer as DV (which will end up in an avi file), and once editied, save it as a DV type avi file. You can then transfer back to the camera using either Ulead or DVIO or similar. If you use firewire for this, and don't have something else running and churning the harddrive, you should not have any jerking or skipping.

i had made the video and edited the image as mpeg file. what size do i need to make the mpeg file (352x240Mpeg1 or 720x480Mpeg2)? when i had mad the AVI file and when i was transfering it to my camcorder using DVIO it had an error window and when i tried to use WINDV after a few images transfered or a few seconds the image freezes but the timer on the miniDV still counts? what could be wrong? thanks.

Try either resolution, but use MPEG-2.

I think your biggest problem is a lack of understanding of the fundamentals of what you are doing. This is not meant as an insult, but an observation based on your questions and statements to date. Without this background, it makes it difficult to give you simple answers.

I suggest you do some background reading on DV, Mpeg-2 etc. A good place to start is here : http://digitalfaq.com/capture/dv.htm
then look around the rest of the site. I think it will make much of this clearer for you, and give you a greater chance of success.

i had made an Mpeg2 file and converted it with WinDV since when I use DVIO i get an error and exits. the problem is i can see no 'preview' even if the preview box is checked and the "Q" at the bottom right is "Q:0" and the camcorder is blue screen when i click on Record (showing it's recording). I can see the timer go but blue screen on my camcorder and no preview on the WinDV window. what could be wrong?
