I have an NEC ND-2510a writer in an external Plumax enclosure (with Prolific chipset). I cannot burn a DVD. It will read and write on CD-RW and CD-R, it will play commercial DVDs. When I put in a blank DVD-R the name in explorer changes to CD-drive and trying to copying files it asks to insert a disc. Checking properties>settings is shows a blank DVD-R under media type. I have tried burning with my video software (Studio 8 and Sony DVD Architect) and both hang the program when the disc is put in the writer.
Is this about disc compatibility or something else? I have Ridata and Newegg blanks.

What interface for the external box? That sounds like a USB 2.0 problem.
