Looks like this recorder is off to a rocky start already:

The brand name isn't very inspiring.

If it is a variation of a liteon shouldnt we be able to hack the firmware?

But can you use the 1394 for output?

  6. Don't be so quick to judge by the name, my friend gave me crap because I had all these Apex players (3), he bought a Pioneer 343, a year later now, his is dead, all 3 of mine still work.

  8. Maybe they were too embarrassed to put their name on it?

  9. I saw that review but notice that the person who had problems had a similar problem with the next recorder he tried. Something could be wrong with his VCR or whatever his source is. Maybe the first batch was defective. But then again I guess you get what you pay for when they only cost $150.

I don't see anything bad in the reviews section. I would actually write off most of them as nothings. I ignore what I consider to be user error, bad judgments, and non-ownership/non-viewing of output. I was able to ignore all of those.

If it's a LiteOn 5001 with fan, then I'd say go for it!

  13. ILO DVDro4, got one tonight!! One disk and happy so far!

How would one check the chipset? Without taking it apart!

    Questions about it??

Disk I did was in "SP" mode and seemed to possibly be of near DVD quality from a VHS tape.

I may keep this one a few weeks then return it if the hard drive models are out and cheap too. I didn't see that before buying this one, and the little walmart here only has a few things, the super center 50 miles away may have the other model already??

Are there air holes? If so, a flash light and good eyesight.

  15. Hmm, I have a flashlight

I will try to look when I move it again. Top and sides are smooth, no holes. Bottom has punched louvers/slots for air. Rear has a fan about the size of a PC chipset fan. About where would I expect to find the chipset, top of board facing up???
If so I'd have to pull the top I think. Might do that if no chance of causing problems that would prevent me from returning it if need be later. Like void if broken labels or anything. I would like to see the insides
    Want pics??

Where I have it sitting and connected right now I can't tell much more than that, but I will be moving it again soon. Not really any need to have a recorder connected to my ATI AIW really!

  16. Is the fan on the left as you face it? It starting to sound like this unit. Frys had it on sale a few weeks ago for 150 but now 199

How redable are the disk it makes in another player or even a computer?

PS: Can some one post the FCC id number? It may be a way to figure out who and what is inside of this beast.
