Not sure if this has been mentioned here before..

Holographic recording technology records data on discs in the form of laser interference fringes, enabling existing discs the same size as today's DVDs to store as much as one terabyte of data (200 times the capacity of a single layer DVD), with a transfer speed of one gigabyte per second (40 times the speed of DVD).

Whoa! 200 movies on one disk! My whole collection would fit on two disks..

  3. Cool technology but they need backers.

It looks like HD-DVD and/or Blu-Ray will be the next generation of optical media.

Anyone still remember FMD (fluorecent multilayer disc)? Made by an Israeli company a few years ago. Undeniably cool and very clever and held around 100-500 Gb (I don't quite remember the size of their prototype) on a 12 cm optical disc.
