    Boy that guy was helpful!

A capture card that can output PAL, would not be as cheap as you can go. Try just making a video file on a DVD or CD and send it to whoever wants it. It will play fine on a computer in Greece, they'll just have to be the ones to convert it (Cheap for you, though!). Even cheaper than sending a video tape(tape can be erased and weighs more).

Just remember, we're talking VHS here so keep your video resolution in the ballpark of only 240 lines. So I'd use MPEG1, not MPEG2.

You could drop by a duplication house somewhere and pay a coupla dollars to get it converted.

With the other guy's idea, you would need a PAL camcorder to run the newly converted video out to the camcorder via firewire and use the composite out on the camcorder to go to a PAL VCR.

I thought you specified the word, "cheap"?

they have VCRs that play all formats but last I checked, they were pretty damn expensive. You'd need one of those and one PAL VCR. Switch the universal VCR to NTSC input and PAL output then connect your PAL VCR to it and record. Like I said DVD or CD would be easier. It'd be cheaper to send money for the person in Greece to buy a DVD player.

  10. Just mail your friends in Greece. Ask them for the vcr model. Chances are that the vcr will play ntsc tapes. Even the cheapest vcrs sold here in Europe can play ntsc tapes.

    Good luck

    Quickest answer...

VCR out (NTSC).....Switchable VCR in (PAL)

  13. It would be cheaper to have it done professionally...check the telephone book.
As was stated earlier you need a PAL VCR or converter to record unless your friends in Greece have a multi-system VCR.

Hellas use PAL, not SECAM (since 1989)

The "easier" way to convert NTSC to PAL, is to convert your source to DVD using a DVD standalone recorder, then force a DVD standalone player output NTSC to PAL and record to a PAL VCR to VHS.

If you don't have a PAL VCR, then re-capture your source, this time as PAL, to a DVD Standalone recorder capable to do PAL or a PC with a capture card

You can probably buy a cheap DVD Recorder and a cheap DVD player that converts for what a converting VCR will cost you. I own one and they are VERY expensive and hard to find.

So? Mail them a tape and see if it will play. It'd be absolutely retarded to worry about getting it into PAL format if their setup will play NTSC. You always do the simplest thing first, then worry about other steps if it doesn't work.

And it'll be far easier and probably cheaper for you to buy them a new VCR that will play NTSC even if their current one won't. If they're the only ones you really need to have the tapes for, why complicate your life changing formats for a one shot for no good reason?

  21. Are these tapes copyrighted movies?
If they are you and your friends in Greece can be fined or jailed for trafficking.

Hey, where do you live? I got a decent converting multisystem VCR that would take any signal, be it PAL, SECAM or NTSC and then convert it to any system. If you are still interested, I can do the conversion for you and not for too much money either.

Check the PM I sent you.

To keep it cheap and easy, I'd say to just pay somebody to do it. I offer such services through my site (www.digitalFAQ.com), and I'm sure there are many others too, maybe even walk-in stores near you.
