Is there a better route than this one for a better quality DVD?

    DV>avi>mpeg

  2. When DV is copied from tape to your PC via firewire, it is stored in an avi container, no data is encoded, it is an exact copy of the data on the tape.

So to answer your question, no, there is no higher quality way than you described.

(except filters, post processing etc may improve the perceived quality to some)

Along the same lines, is quality better by transfering via firewire or going through the S-Video or RCA connectors?

I have been transferring via s-video and have not bothered with the firewire.

Firewire by far, if your transferring footage from a digital cam using component or s-video you are in sense going backward. Using firewire is just like copying the video from your cam to your hd, very similar to copying files. The only thing you need is a firewire port and capture software, no capture card required.

Not only is the transfer lossless but there's other advantages such as the audio being in perfect sync. I suggest you change your method.
