  1. Finished installing the dvd-rw and I don't have a software to watch a DVD in it.

What freewares are available? Thanks. :

edit: Is there a codec or something that I can download and let Windows Media Player 9 play the DVD?

PowerDVD. Came with my mobo. WinDVD that came with my DVD Reader crashes constantly.

I generally use PowerDVD, but also Videolan and Zoom Player.

For DVD, you need a MPEG2 Codec. Most players come with them and will continue to work even if you uninstall the player. This will also allow WMP9 to play DVDs, but it sucks at that. Windows Media Player Classic is a better choice.

    I use windvd 4.

I know it is downloadable at HP's website, search HP pavilion ze4420us and look for software. It's pretty big though, better be broadband.

PowerDVD for testing when authoring. I don't watch DVDs on my PC because software players suck when it comes to image quality.

That is a pretty general statement that a lot of people would disagree with. Have you tried a setup with an significant post processing (i.e. AVIsynth, ffDshow)??

Properly set up, my computer can beat the pants off of my progressive scan DVD player.

I tend to agree with guns1inger here. I don't know whether it is the codec that PowerDVD uses or my set up, but the picture is always crystal clear on my standalone whereas on the PC, I generally get a bit of noise. I'd prefer a 27" screen to a 15" screen any day too.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I only play DVDs on the computer to test my authored DVDs. I use WinDVD Recorder since it will handle the AC-3 stream that is produced by my Panasonic E80H DVD recorder. I prefer to play DVDs on my 27" TV rather than on a computer monitor...

I always thought media player classic was good as far freeware goes.

  15. WinDVD plays very slow on my system and as someone posted earlier, has a tendency to crash. As such, I usually default to WMP

VLC media player (Video LAN Client) works for me! Its free, and the best part is, it plays any region DVDs, even on a region locked drive!
My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.
