  1. i've noticed quite a bit of 16x drives (i'm considering buy the NEC dual layer).

i know the dual layer media is hard to find. (1 disk of 10)

but is there any timeframe for 16x media?

    thanks.

    Really, there are two questions:

    1) When will it be available?

    2) When will it be affordable?

Number 2 is every bit as important as number 1. Dual layer media is readily available, but NOT affordable. There has been a strong downwards trend on prices for single-layer media, and hopefully 16x media will not reverse that trend.

More companies are starting up production of 16X media - Prodisc just got the greenlight a few weeks ago and should start shipping them soon.

Unfortunately, CMC also got the greenlight so we may get flooded with crappy media too.

Any way you look at it, the more manufacturers, the better as more competition will bring prices down.

The 16x blanks will not be widely available until November.

Here's the dirty little secret of the computer industry - all the different speeds come off the same assembly line. The manufacturing difference between a 2.8 P-4 and a 3.2 P-4 is how it tests after its made. I wouldn't be surprised if the difference between 4X and 8X media is how they test after they come off the line.

Back in the good old days of my Amiga, the media of choice was DS/DD floppies. The difference between those and SS/SD floppies was whether they could take formatting after manufacture. Of course, in every box of 10 (at $30 a box), there were one or two duds.

IMHO, if we are talking single layer, it's prolly hardly worth getting a DVD burner and blanks over 8-12x anyway, as the real life burn time difference will be less than 2-5 mins. It'll only reach 12x or 16x or whatever it's rated at, at the end of the burn. And speaking for myself, I'm gonna skip DL burners all together and wait for HD DVD (not the BlueRay), I'm happy with the quality of backups (they ARE only stinking backups) even if I need to shrink the movie by up to 35%.

It takes only 15mins to burn using my current 4x NEC on 4x blank, do I really want to upgrade sometime soon? NO.

But, I guess those who R burning 100's of blanks a week, won't agree.

  11. Well i have just burnt a Ritek (ANV 8X Go5) at 12X and it takes as long as doing one at 8X.....
The time saved while burning at 12X is lost as the drive stops just before changing up to 12 speed....
So is it worth it, Na....
