  1. I just got my 108, and have it in an external firewire enclosure. Will I still be able to update the firmware if it's not directly connected to the IDE slot?

Also, I've only been able to rip dual layer discs at 4x. Is this normal? Or will hacked firmware help that?

    TIA

  2. I was able to flash my 106D in an external USB2 box. So I'd say you have a fighting chance. If you can't, mount it in your PC for the update (or find a PC if you have a laptop).
If you try to rip a pressed non-CSS encrypted DVD-5 and you get speeds faster than 4x than the drive may be artifically locked. Most of the third-party f/w updates unlock ripping speeds. Again, worked for my 106D.

I ordered a 108 yesterday and plan on using f/w 1.10 on RPC1.org. I'm keeping my 106D in the external box though and mounting the 108 internally.

    Best of Luck,

  3. Hey! You guys have success burning DL DVD+R yet? If you did please tell me what media and burning software you used. I had a failure using Ritek and Nero at the "layer 2" switch point. All was well until it started 2nd layer. Please let me know - Thanks!

Using 1.06 firmware here and some disks will rip at 12X but most will rip at far less cant seem to pin down which will and which wont though as most i have done have been fresh out of the box and unplayed... So you haven't got a problem there with the ripping speed. To be honest when its ripping at 12X it makes a hell of a noise.
    Not bothered by small problems...

  5. I'm showing firmware revision 1.04, I really should update, but I'm a little worried about flashing it in an external enclosure.

  6. I just checked Pioneer's website, and can't find anything at all about the 108? Are they not supporting this drive yet? Is there an 'official' firmware release other than the 1.04 which I am currently using?

  8. Just got the DVR 108 yesterday.

Mfg date July 2004, firmware 1.04.

After installing Nero 6303, Nero couldn't see it in select recorders.
I upgraded to 63120 then Nero sees it as DVR-108.

    Burned the following:

Sony cdrw 10x, burned at 10x.

Gigastorage cdr 24x, burned at 32x.

    Maxcel dvd+r 4x, burned at 4x.
I used nero express to copy a dvd in this test so I didn't select the burn speed.
However, checking out the Pioneer site I noticed that they list Maxcel 4x dvd+r media as burning at 4x. They list Maxcel dvd+r 8x media to burn at 12x.

Anynews on if the 1.10 firmware is good ?

  9. Decided to do some digging and found this.

Looks like a firware update will not work if Intel drivers are installed instead of M$ defaults.

    Is this outdated info ?

Can someone confirm this to be true ?

Interesting. I just got a Pioneer 108 yeasterday as well. I ordered it from Newegg and the writer was manufactured in July as well, but it came with 1.10 firmware. So far the 1.10 firmware is fine on the couple of DVD's I burned. It is suppose to improve write speeds for the drive.

  11. I just ordered mine yesterday from NewEgg, mostly based on the AnandTech review, plus the price was pretty good at about $91. Hopefully it will also have the newest firmware...

  12. I moved it to a amd system and flashed it.
Haven't tried to burn yet but the flash was good.
Shows up in nero info tools as 1.10 firmware.

    I got it here

Just got mine in today - it has firmware 1.10. I used Prodisc 8X white inkjet printables (media ID is MCC02RG0) and they burned beautifully at 12X! Awesome!

I also got mine from Newegg. Excellent price! Enjoy!
