I took my boy and niece to the movies the other day (to see Yu Gi Oh) and expected to see Metal detectors and snoopers looking for camcorders but didn't see any (many they were hidden reallllly well), but I did see a little sticker that had a big I on it. On further investigation because I was bored it turned out to be this.

Rated I, Innappropriate to download movies from the internet.

I am almost died laughing... Inappropriate???? Shouldn't it say ILLEGAL???? Wouldn't that be more a little more eye catching and have a little more emphasis. I just see it now, downloading is going to take a severe drop because it's INNAPPROPRIATE.

Also it was written on a postage stamp sized area in an obscure area. Most people are going to think it's some sort of sign about not smoking or some other crap like that. Maybe it's just me but if the MPAA wants to do something about the illegal downloads, then that is really just a waste of their time, but more power to 'em.

It reflects a small number on camcorder recorded video recorded in the same room. It cannot be detected by the human eye, except when played back by certain programs, it says what theatre the movie was taped in. So once it is uploaded on the internet, MPAA has the theater location, and it will only be a matter on time before they nail the pirate, since they know where the crime takes place. Hey it's a more plausible story than the peg boy -- yuck!

No way... really.... even if they are not pointing camera at that little icon its reflectivity causes it be recorded?

Maybe this is why the Vdub logo away filter is suddenly so popular.

Yes. You see, there are at least two icons, so to speak. One is accessible by ground personnel, the other is a little higher in the back of the theatre. The one in the back of the theatre reflects its IIDN (individual identification number) from light from the movie back on the screen. The camcorder picks it up the reflected number and records it along with rest of the movie. Once the pirate uploads the movie, he also has unknowingly uploaded where the movie was taped from.

The ground level icon serves a second function. It identifies which number the back icon will be recorded in a particular theatre. This comes in handy when movies are pirated from mall theatres where there are more than one screen in a complex.

What about the theater employee in the projection room ripping it from the reel?

That is another process even more diabolical. It was derived from the movies studio producers used to rent/sell to networks. As you recall, a white box would appear just before the commercial. This is where the projector would detect it and stop the projector fifteen seconds later.

The studio would then see the little box, prepare to run a commercial, and when the projector stopped, they would run the commercial. Then start the projector again once the commercial spot was over.

Here, the spot is less than two pixels wide, and hardly discernible to the naked eye, and each movie positions it in a different spot on the screen, and in a different part in each movie. The pixel appears and disappears very rapidly, faster than the human eye can perceive it, but certain video player programs can decode it. The code the pixel is fllashing is an individual serial number of the movie.

So, when Amblyn rents a movie to Capmaster's Cinema, so to speak, they record the serial number of which movie he rented. Then comes Tgpo, the temp projectionist, who records the movie directly from the projector while it is playing to the late evening audience, while Capmaster is sleeping soundly in his bed, wishing he could catch the pirate who is stealing his potential profits.

Anyway, once Tgpo has finished his misdeed, he also unknowing recording the pixelated code of the serial number of the movie Capmaster rented. Tgpo uploads the movie, and Amblyn has a team of hackers who are lurking around Kazaa and other filesharers waiting for this moment. They see Tgpo's upload, download it, play it on their special software and decode the serial number of Da Prez'z movie. They call Cap, ask him who his projectionist is, and the next thing you know Tgpo finds out first hand what a PB is.

Even if this were true, when the "hacker" downloaded the movie he broke the peer to peer applications EULA. Wouldn't that automatically void any trouble TGPO could have gotten in?

Tgpo could have also removed the watermarks thus voiding the entire situation.

There are no watermarks per se. If you knew what part of the movie to look for and what part of the screen to scan, all you would see are a series of flashing pixels. You must have the secret software video player to decode the pixelated code.
