  1. So I buy 100 Taiyo Yuden from Rima and they are shinny topped with nothing on the disk, come in a clear cake box and no mention of "Made in xxx" anywhere. There are no ID marks on disk or package.
DVDIdentifier and Nero Info Tool both say Manufacture: Tayio Yuden and TYG01. But if the code can be faked and they aren't branded how can I be sure?
    Curious...
    Thanks...NL

Good question, I just bought 50 myself, got them today and asking myself the same question. I guess the proof will be in the quality of the burns. I have seen nothing but positive reviews here and on other sites about Rima and these discs.
    Cant trust Maxell anymore!!

    there are fakes around --

i can't say for sure .... but a large number of red hot deals on ebay may be fakes -- then again , sometimes its just a great deal ..

  4. Just wanted to add that I have had nothing but excellent results with the TY's from RIMA.com. I decided on TY's from the many posts here from respected members. I've also use several Maxell's TY G01 code.
Due to some recent reading and the plain silver discs w/o any ID or brand and the recent Maxell stunt I got to thinking how could I really prove what I had???
    Thanks...NL

I just compared one of these Rima TY's with a Maxell TY and other than the printing they look identical, both have a number etched in the inner hub by the hole. To the eye the dye seems exactly the same in color and appearance.
They prob buy in bulk direct from the factory in Japan and put in their own cake boxes, thus the reasonable price.
I am confident they are real.

And if they are branded how can you be sure that isn't faked?

Call them and find out. I don't actively track who's legit and who's not, as this can change. You can call the media vendor too (say, RITEK USA, or MAXELL CORP) to see if they made the list.

Yes but can someone actually alter the code identifier?
We all have the ability to print something onto a printable DVD. We could print the word Verbatim, Ritek or even NG onto a printable.
A reputable dealer lists the ID Code along side the description...just check the code when you receive them. One disc from the top, middle and bottom of the cakebox..
I only buy silver top Ritek DVD's(my personal preference) BECAUSE there is no writing on them. They arrive in an unmarked cakebox as well. No writing on either does not mean they are fake. I wish I knew of more manufacturers who put out totally "naked" media. No Geek jokes please..

  11. The media id is generated off the stamper when the blank is manufactured, so it cannot be altered, it can only be infringed, or faked, from the outset and usually happens in mass numbers (like the past Maxell fiasco). If this is an issue I'm sure this post won't be the end of it.

One recurring characteristic of yudens that I've taken notice of is the case it comes in, and for the most part on all of the spindles I have recieved have a paper sheet that warns about "High speed media damaging your burner" on the top disc. The discs are also always squeaky, oddly enough, and the edges are always rounded and smooth with the very dark navy dye appearance. That's evidence enough for me - I use Rima for all my online media purchases and have always gotten good discs.

    To date, the fakes:

    TDKG02
    RITEKG03
    TYG02
    MXLRG01

Those are ones I've personally seen in the past.
All of them came from Hong Kong or Taiwan.

Thanks Smurf. Interesting to know that there are dirtballs out there doing it.
My whole point was can "we" alter a code. We (meaning a retailer as well) would find it nearly impossible to alter a code on already manufactured media. We could however LIE about it's authenticity by false advertising or simply printing any name we chose on it....hoping the buyer does not know about the ID Code.
    See where I'm going now?..
My brain works in mysterious ways sometimes.
