Does anyone know if there is a Dual-Layer firmware hack for a LG GSA-4040B DVD multi-recorder? I E-mailed LG and they said that the drive is not capable of burning dual-layer DVDs and I should buy there new 12x Dual-Layer Multi-recorder. I really didn't expect them to tell me that I done have to buy a Dual-Layer Multi-recorder and there will be a free firmware update, but I was hoping. I know you can update some NEC to burn dual-layer DVD. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it.

I have the same drive, and it works fine, but I certainly don't expect it to be firmware-upgradeable to dual-layer! It was released long before the first dual-layer DVD blanks were even announced. Only a few of the most recent drives have turned out to be upgradeable, and those upgrades are not supported by the manufacturer. Be reasonable - the LG drive only cost $100 last year, and by the time dual-layer DVD blanks come down to a reasonable price sometime next year, it will be time to upgrade to a new recorder anyway.
