hi, i recently got a brand new G4 1.25 single with panther. i like it a lot. i notice it runs hot, heat comes out the rear pretty good and cd's come out of the drive very warm. i dont notice this so much on my G4 866(dual) w/jaguar.
should i be worried? it does seem rather warm, esp where the power supply heat exits.
all fans appear operational and the large cpu fan does spin up and down like the 866 model.
on a side note, the dual 866 was one of the "jet engine" models when i got it. it was so loud it rattled the plastic case. i got the "quiet power supply" from apple for $25 and it got really quiet. the 1.25 single is just as quiet, but far more hot.
keep in mind i am used to the low heat that 9600's and P3's produce.
i gave away one of my 9600's and the other sits there lonely as heck. i honestly thought i would still use it for SOMETHING, anything.

I have one of the new G4 eMac's (1.25 G4, usb 2.0) and don't have a problem with heat or noise in spite of the all-in-one design. The G5 towers are the ones that cook. I work for an international commercial printer and our corporate contract now requires Dell pc's and single G5 macs. We've lost hard drives and ram from heat in single G5's but have no problem with G4's. Regardless of the model, don't cover the vents. The lucite stand for my eMac was $70, (paid for with the 5% Mac Center Gift Card rebate when I bought the eMac) but well worth it since gets it about 3 inches off the desk.

The G4 MDD model has been known to heat up ALOT! this is normal. if things get too out of control, ie cooking your desk then you should look into some alternative cooling options.
