Is downloading Japanese Anime sub illegal or legal?
Is there any possible way that it can be illegal?

Its illegal if its copyright and stated not to be distributed freely and its legal if its public domain, its up to you to find out which since there is question in its legality.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
The anime community do a lot of "fan subs", these are subs created by fans, and I doubt that anyone would care about copyright... I suppose it depends on where you get them from...

You should really be asking a lawyer not a bunch of opinionated video & disc junkies.
Is it illegal....maybe....depends on where you live & the odds of you getting caught by someone with lawyers and how badly they want to push the issue. If you want to do it, do it. If you think you will go to Hell or jail, don't. -
The main reason why no one here cares (and why you don't need to make an "announcement") is that this is not an anime board. Why would you even need to post about your downloading habits, legal or otherwise?
So, would anyone care if I put on two sets of boxers instead of one? -
Because of this topic that i read https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=234466
And what's with your attitude?
It was just a question. -
As long as the subs are over 18 you shouldn't have a problem.
I won't get into that though. -
And it was just an answer.
Plus, the last poster in that link is correct. -
ok...
i admit that it was an answer but do you always do this to other people, giving other people attitude? -
Yes, he gave me attitude but I managed to survive it
I think I need a group hug to make me feel better -
EvilKid, I wouldn't know. Most people don't cry about my answers. Plus, I see my so-called answers as more of sagely advice.
Take a cue from menes777. Even giant, multi-colored fonts can't bring him down -
Downloading a subbed Japanese anime is definitely illegal.
However, from what I understand, the copyright owners of the anime have a somewhat relaxed attitude towards fan-subs (especially foreign language subs). I believe that in general, as long as there isn't an official release of the particular language, it is tolerated.

When I changed my Avatar (and got S2K to temporarily change his in spirit of the Pirates theme) I forgot to change my location and when I posted again and read it, I about died laughing as it does sort of look like old Captain Jack Sparrow is looking for something.
I am about to change my avatar again but in the meantime I will have to come up with a funny line for the Cap'n to be looking for (maybe I could make that a thread?). -

I just thought of something, pirates need fresh breath and reduced tartar as much as gods do, oops I mean dogs do.
