My boss just got in a Sony U18A at work. In my mind, the thing appears to be crap. Apparently these are rebadged LiteOn drives, which I could care less about. I just want it to work, which it apparently doesn't. It burns DVDRW media at single speed just fine, but it appears to only allow burning on DVDR media at 2x or higher, with no option for single speed. This is a problem for me because while I can burn data DVDs at 2x-4x speeds on the burner with no problem, it fails verification checks burning DVD-Video at those speeds and the playback on several DVD players is awful - the picture skips like crazy. I wouldn't have this problem if it was burning at single speed, and the DVDRW single speed writes it does work fine. I've tried several pieces of software and they don't seem to be able to force the drive to burn at single speed. Does anybody know how to force this bloody thing to burn at single speed?

Many newer, faster drives will not write at 1x, period.

Having said that, your problem is (IMHO) much more likely to be with the media you are using, than with the burn speed. Buy better media, burn it at 4x, and be happy.
