First off JVC Tech support s_cks. I guess its out of Pakastan.
I have several question on this unit.
I have it connected to a JVC AV-56WP74. I had it connect to port 1 and the screen would go black for a second then come back on. It even did this when I was dubbing a VHS tape. I changed several things at once so, I'm not sure which one fixed it.
I moved it to port 3.
I connected the Video cable (first I just had the Red/White wire connected) and I also replaced the S-video cable. (one end was missing the black thing inside) This appears to have fixed it. But, if port 1 is bad I would like to get it fixed before it goes of warranty.
Do I have to connect the video cable if I'm using S-Video
Next problem:
When using the timer it won't record. When I turn it on it will say something like "unable to record some part " or something like that. What I'm I doing wrong. I formatted in VD mode, using a -R/W disk.
Thanks for your help.
I bought the unit base on advice from this forum.

You don't have to connect the video cable when using the s-video cable. To timer record you have to push the timer button on the remote, not just turn off the power. There is a place in the setup menus that you can set the timer record to come on automatically when the power is turned off, without having to push timer on the remote, but that is not the factory setting. You probably just had a bad jack or connection, not a bad port.

First of all, do yourself a favor and record in DVD-Video mode, not VR. The finalized disc will be much more compatible with other DVD players and the video files (VOB's) are easier to edit and re-author with your computer.
In the setup menu, you must select whether you want s-video or (composite) video input for each of the three inputs. The two input types are not active at the same time... you must pick one or the other. Your Input 1 is probably pre-set to composite video instead of s-video.
Make sure your cables are good. I just recently discovered one of my cable ends has gone bad after a couple of years of good service. Cheap cables will often have poorly connected terminal ends, so use the best quality that you can afford.
As far as timer recording goes, that's not a feature I have used yet. The owners's manual is a bit confusing to read, but I'm sure it has the the answer for you on that point. It sounds like samijubal has used this feature and knows what he's talking about, too.
