  1. DVD burners don't region code the discs burned on them do they? The region codes are just for playback of prerecorded discs right?

  2. Region coding is encoded on the disc. The burner will pass whatever region coding information is present to the burned disc, unless you change or remove it with the software. Now your DVD drives are hard-coded for a specific region.

Your DVD Burner will come with a region already preset. But just because you purchased it in the United States doesn't mean it will automatically be set for Region 1. My Optorite DD-0203 drives were set for Region 2 right out of the box.

You are usually allowed 4 region changes on a DVD drive before you are locked out. Unless, of course, you apply a region hack. I don't, since I never need to worry about region codes myself.

As you can see, here is one of my Optorite drives...

And here is one of my Toshiba SD-M1502 DVD-ROM drives...

I applied the hack for the Toshiba that removes the ripping limit on the drive, which is why it only shows one region change left.

  3. It depends on the software you use and how you use it. For example I can use DVD Shrink to make a region free disc, a disk that is all region, or a disc for a specific region. It also depends on the software you rip with, but most I have used rip a set of files that are All Region.
Still a few bugs in the system...

  4. I'm not going to copy from prerecorded discs, I'm going to copy discs from a standalone recorder. So the ones I want to copy would be code free. The burner won't region code the copies then?

Nope. Not unless you specify so with burning software.
