I want to add another dvd r-+/rw+- drive to my computer. Is this a good idea? My setup : win xp sp1 - abit kr7a mobo - amd athlon xp 2000 (1.74ghz) - 512 mb pc 2700 ddr - 40 gb hard drive - dvd rom drive - plextor px 708A. With just 1 hard drive could i burn on both recorders at the same time with my current setup? Has anyone tried this type of config before and if so how did it work out.

I've got two quad format DVD burners in my rig... haven't tried burning two different sets of files to each burner at the same time, though. Try it with two DVD-RW's to see what happens (you can re-burn those if it doesn't work out). Seems like with the speed of your setup and the buffering in the burners, it probably would work OK.

U can use another writer but you must write with a program that supports more than one recorder, e.g. Nero & you have to write the same image on each writer (at least that's what I have to do).

Replace one of those optical drives with it. You really don't need two DVD burners and any other optical drives since they'll do pretty much everything. As for writing to both Nero will do this but it is the same image. I use one internal and 3 external FireWire burners to write duplicate images for larger customer orders (up to a point where I outsource them to be cut).

Dunno about DVDr's but using nero with multiple CD burners at the same time to mass produce CD's required that the 2 CD burners were the same brand, model and firmware. (More than 2 burners at once cost $800 for an upgraded Nero, allowing up to 7 burners, which is what I had back in the dark days of 4x burners).
It is of course not really relevant for CD burners anymore, they can pretty much burn em as fast as you can feed and label them, but for DVD's it might still be of some benefit, even with 16x burners lurking around!
