I've got a chance to get a used ADVC 300 and I'm wondering if it would be worth it with yet to be purchased DVD Recorder. I'm preparing to do VHS & Video 8 conversions to DVD, both through a DVD recorder (limited editing) and some by PC (better editing). Thanks!

No. You only need a capture card (with DVD burner drive) or standalone DVD recorder, not both.

If you are planning to edit VHS or other analog movies on your computer there is a quality and time-saving advantage to importing with the Canopus device rather than having to convert the MPEG2 from a DVD to an editable format.

But, for me, I found the standalone DVD recorder to be more than adequate and chose to sell my ADVC-55 because it wasn't getting any use. I might have done differently if my DVD recorder didn't have a hard drive so I could do the basic editing I wanted before burning to disc.

That hasn't been my experience. For the last year I've been capturing on the computer, editing, encoding, authoring and burning. Now I capture and encode to a DVD recorder without tying up the computer. Then I use Womble to edit the VOBs and then reauthor. I find using a DVD recorder is much more convenient.
