Ok I'm trying to adde subtitles to a movie, I have the .srt file in the same folder as the movie mpeg1 file, when I open Tmpgenc and preview it doesn't show the subs. What am I doing wrong?
Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

You're doing nothing wrong, it's just not that simple. What is your target format? VCD/SVCD or DVD? How to add subs depend on what you want to encode to, but basically for VCD/SVDC, you have to make permanent subs, mostly done by using a subtitler filter in VirtualDub, frameserving to TMPGEnc. For DVD, you have to convert the SRT to a format you DVD authoring package handles. I Use IfoEdit to author, and SRT2SUP to convert .SRT to a format IfoEdit can handle.

    yes it is that simple.

do you see the subs when you play the mpeg with media player??
if so try raise the directshow priority in tmpgenc.
if not install vobsub and be sure that you see the subs with media player.

or try frameserve virtualdub as mats says.

    My target is DVD.
Yes I do see the subs in Media Player
The DirectShow Priority is at the top of the list in Tmpgenc.
I have Vobsub but here I'm not sure if i have Vobsub set up right or if I'm using it correctly.

What I remember is I started it in Preview and scrolled to one of the bits that should have the subs then pressed play, nothing.

If you're aiming for a DVD, why not create DVD subs (SRT2SUP, remember?), encode the avi to DVD mpeg, and author subs + mpeg with IfoEdit? On a DVD, permanent subs are a bit lame! :P

ok guys, I have managed to get a dvd compliant file of the film with switchable subs. I did this by demuxing my mpeg2 file to m2v and mp2 then using mats guide(sorry Baldrick) I somehow got the subs on. I then authored with Ifoedit but don't have chapters. I tried to reauthor with TMPgenc to give the chapters but I lost the subs. I would like to have chapters but got very confused by matts guide in that stage, I didnt have the original IFO because it was an mpeg1 file originally.
All your help has been and still is greatly appreciated.

There's an option to set capter points in IfoEdit too - When I don't have the original IFO, I usually set one point each 10 minutes. For this, I keep a text file with chapter points every 10 minutes up to 4 hours, copy as many as I want from the text file and paste it into IfoEdit.
As TDA doesn't support subs, they were removed when you reauthored.

yep, TMPGenc DVD Author currently does not support subtitles in any shape or form !!!!

Even if you backup a DVD movie with subtitles, say a Japenese movie with English subtitles activated, TMPGenc DVD Author will remove them and you end up with the Japanese opriginal and no English subtitles

I found this out when I bought a Japaneses DVD and wanted to add this into my DVD backup guide, then found out it ain't supported

So, if you try and backup ANY movie with ANY subtitles, you won't get them

Kill Bill is a prime example

Maybe this will be added/fixed very soon, we've been waiting long enough .............

Thats a bummer. In that case how do I reate this text file of is it "cell times"? and where do I put it in. Can I add it to my already authored file?

Don't have the exact format for what to enter, but it think it's frame based, so to make chapters every 10 minutes, you enter:
    0
    15000
    30000
    45000

and so on (based on PAL 25 fps)

And, you have to reauthor. There's no way to add chapters to a already authored DVD.

Ok I now have a success. I created a celltimes.txt file like you said matt but it didn't work. After a lot of searching I found out that I mustn't do that first line of "0". Once I tried again it all worked.
So thanks for all your help matt and Baldrick, this site really rocks, it's so helpfull.
    Cheers
