I'm a little confused about when to use DVD Decrypter in backing up a DVD.

Following the guide from the left hand lists I find it recommends you use Decrypter to save the DVD to HD then open with DVDshrink and backup then it burns the DVD automatically.

I did the above to test it and everything worked fine.

I had read somewhere that DVdshrink removes copy protection so I wondered why do I need to first use Decrypter so I did another test this time just loading the DVD into DVDshrink and doing a backup and burn and this worked as well but saving lots of time. This movie also did not need shrinking as the size was less than 4.5gb.

So can someone tell me when I need to use Decrypter? Will DVD shrink let me know if the DVD being backed up is protected such that it will not be able to copy it properly? Also if the whole disk movie files will fit on a DVD could one simply use DVD Decrypter to back it up and then burn it. In this case would you wite it as an ISO file then use Decryptor to read it as ISO and burn it?

  2. DVD Shrink removes the protection as well. I always use DVD Shrink for all of my ripping and then use DVD Decrypter to burn the resulting ISO image that was created by DVD Shrink. The only time I ever use DVD Decrypter to rip anymore is if the disc is damaged or error prone, where DVD Decrypter is better able to rip the damaged disc.

Of course you could also rip the disc using DVD Decrypter if the disc is single layer, since you won't be needing DVD Shrink unless you wanted to remove or compress something for some reason.

I often use DVD Shrink to remove parts of the DVDs even on Single Layer discs. I often remove the foreign language tracks, as I'm more of an english-speaking kind of guy . I figure that the further off of the edge of the disc I am without removing anything I deem of value from the original disc, the better. Think of it as insurance for crappy media

Thanks Steve also the first time I had I DVD Decrypter burn it and on the next test I had DVD Shrink use Nero to burn it. No problems either way. I didn't time it but Nero seemed quicker for some reason.

I read that some think DVD Decrypter is the better for burning of Nero and itself. Have others any opinion on this? I realize if one has to buy Nero then yes DVD Decrypter which is free is the better choice but Nero 6 vcame with the burner.

I have found that decrypter burns a little better most of the time, and alot better some of the time. Everyonce and awhile, I will get errors towards the end of the disk when I burn with Nero that can cause freezing. But Nero always has slightly higher (30 vs 20 pif, not really significant) error rate. I have not noticed that Nero was faster. If yo have a single layer, by all means just use decrypter.

    Hi,
Up until a short while ago i would only use DVD Shrink to make backups as i saw it as a easy route. Put in your dvd and it did all the work for you. It was pointed out to me that this method could actually put increased wear on your dvd rom drive as dvd shrink would actually make two passes of the dvd, one for analysising and the second for encoding. I know find it easier to firstly rip the dvd to my HD using decrypter. If the dvd has a lot of trailers/extras i dont want, i rip as 'Main Movie plus IFO', otherwise i just rip as an 'ISO' file. Once ripped i then check the file size and if small enough i use decrypter to burn. If the file size is to big for a DVD5 i will then use shrink with nero. With this method i actually find the encoding and burn time is quicker from my HD than from the disc. I cant prove that there is any less wear on the dvd rom, but as it is only used once it semmed pretty sound advice. :P
