  1. Company's technology that permits users to send shows over the Internet receives FCC approval.
    August 4, 2004: 1:21 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - TiVo Inc., maker of popular digital television recording devices, Wednesday received approval for technology that would permit users to send copies of digital broadcast shows over the Internet.

The Federal Communications Commission voted to certify digital protections on TiVoToGo, which is not yet available but would enable a user to record and send a digital broadcast television show to up to nine other registered people who have a key allowing them to see it.

TiVo plans to launch a version of TiVoToGo this fall that would allow users to transfer recorded shows to a home computer but has not said when it would launch its version that would allow shows to be shared outside the home.

  3. some more of that same article

The agency said it did not adopt limits on where the content could be sent because the proposed technologies "employ different combinations of device limits, interactive authentication and affinity-based mechanisms to restrict distribution."

in my experience, nothing is safe from cracking or hacking. wasn't it a 13 yr old norweigan kid that made Decss?

    Hello,
anubis13-wasn't it a 13 yr old norweigan kid that made Decss?
I think that was overstated. I think I remember reading he was part of a collective group that worked on the crack.

By the way, are you a Mummy movie fan or an egyptian enthusiast in general Anubis13?? Just curious.

Funny that ReplayTV has been doing this for years for free, and no one seems to have complained.

I guess not many people have ReplayTVs.

Well, I wouldn't say "no one" complained.

It was lawsuits about the show sharing (and commercial skip) that drove SonicBlue into bankruptcy. ReplayTV's current owners, DNNA, have removed both features from their newer models.

  8. Its a bit of a mute point isn't it? Digital capture cards have been around for a while, I dont bother using the VCR anymore, just the computer and DVDrw's. So I am sure there are plenty of digital captured movies doing the round on the internet already - without any protection.

  9. moot point.
those other shows are of course illegal.

most of those shows are of such low quality that its not even worhth keeping them. the only benefit i could see is watching them if you missed the original broadcast
