I have created a VCD from a kvcd.mpg that I downloaded by using Nero with the compliance box unchecked and that works fine. However, I'd really would like to finally end up with a DVD.

I've read a couple of articles about using TMPGEnc DVD Author to produce the DVD. I've installed the trail version but when I open the .MPG file I get an error that says:

The Video GOP is too long.
DVD-video standard requires the GOP is structured as below
    36 fields(18 frame) (NTSC System)
30 fields (15 frame) (PAL System)

If I click ignore to produce an out of standard DVD then click Output the folders are created but nothing else.

Any idea what this means and how can I correct it?

    Thanks

Should have added that I've tried to pass the kvcd.mpg file through TMPGEnc Plus.

I have no idea what settings I need to make but have eventually ended up with the following.

On the MPEG Setting screen I have:

    Video
    Stream Type: MPEG2- Video
    Rate Control Mode: 2-pass VBR(VBR)
    Enocode Mode:Non-interlaced
    DC Component precision: 9 bits
    Motion search precision:Most estimate search(Fast)
    Audio
    MPEG-1 Audio LayerII
    Chnnel Mode: Stereo
Non of the boxes under Bitrate are checked
    De-emphasis flag: None
    System
    MPEG2 Program(VBR)
    GOP Structure
    IBBPBBPBBPBBPBB
    Advanced
    4:3 625 line(PAL 704x576)

Under the output file name it shows

    DVD PAL (MPEG-2 720x576 25fps VBR 3000kbps, Layer-2 48000Hz 384kbps)
When I click Start the progress bar goes immediately to 50% but then I get the following message

An error occurred when audio was decoded

Try to extract the audio first from the KVCD MPEG file. You should be able to do this with VirtualDubMod or maybe even GOLDWAVE (I know it works with GOLDWAVE when using AVI files).

Basically you want to extract the data (which is MP2 format) AND get it in the form of a 16-bit 48k Stereo PCM WAV file.

Now when you use TMPGEnc to encode from the KVCD MPEG use the 16-bit 48k Stereo PCM WAV file as your audio source. Pick LPCM audio in TMPGEnc and then convert to 2.0 AC-3 at a decent bitrate like 256kbps ... you can use BeSweet for that or ffmpeg.

Just wanted to add that DC COMPONENT PRECISION should be set to 10 instead of 9 (minor difference though) and also please note that an AVG bitrate of 3000kbps is very low for Full D1 resolution (720x480 NTSC or 720x576 PAL).

Here is a BITRATE CALCULATOR to help you determine your AVG BITRATE.

    Thanks for the reply.

I've extracted the mpg to a wave file using virtualdubmod as suggested. without making any changes to the settings (couldn't find how to do this anyway). The format of the file is 2 channel stereo, audio sample rate 44kHz, audio format PCM.

I've downloaded Besweet 1.4 and the BesweetGUIv0.6. I've extracted both to a new folder.

I've gone into the Besweet Wizard and my settings are:
    Output type: AC3
    Output Mode: 5.1
    Bitrate(kbps) 256
    FRC Presets: NTSC>PAL (29.970 to 25.000)

When I get to step 5 and click it first off says it can't find the log file but when that's created it opens the Besweet log file and that's as far as I get.

    Note

Since my posting I just tried it again and this time I have the following info in the log file

    BeSweet v1.4 by DSPguru.
    --------------------------
    Using Shibatch.dll v0.2 by Naoki Shibata & DSPguru (shibatch.sourceforge.net).
Error 73: Unable to get ac3enc.dll interfaces
    Quiting...
    [00:00:00:000] Conversion Completed !
    Logging ends : 08/02/04 , 13:52:52.

If I start Besweet in GUI mode I get presented with a mass of info on the first screen none of which I understand other than pointing to the .exe program, the wav file and the output folder.

Sorry to be a pain but I'm really stuck as to how to continue following your instructions as this is all new to me.
