  1. i encoded pvr recordings to DVD at half d1 resolution.

on my std 32" sony xbr, that was the same quality that 704 or 720x480.

but if i buy a new panasonic projection hdtv 47", will be half d1 dvds still stay clear and good quality or am i better to encode at 720x480 right now ?

    thanks.

    This from the 'Glossary':

The formats used in HDTV are:
    720p - 1280x720 pixels progressive
    1080i - 1920x1080 pixels interlaced
    1080p - 1920x1080 pixels progressive

For HDTV the data rates even for DVD are much too low. Not to say that a standard DVD will be unwatchable. The quality should still be quite good.

Of course the bottom line is that unless you have a HDTV source, HDTV will not be as good as it can be. Until they settle on a HDTV DVD standard, I wouldn't worry much about it. (And Blu-ray or other systems to be able to hold a reasonable amount of video at that resolution.)

However HDTV would be a waste viewing 1/2 D1.(IMHO)

  3. on my 57" HDTV rear projection. These is considerable (as big as from VCD to CVD) difference between even xSVCD(480x480 3000kbs CBR) and full D1 DVD video. Also the difference between 720x480 progressive DVD video and 1080i HDTV is even bigger. It is like VCD to DVD difference!.
