it just doesnt work as it used to anymore ...

sometimes you start to get a lot bad burns near the end ..

my pioneer burners die ussually after about 15,000-25,000 disks i estimate in a duplicator and what happens is that the door doesnt stay open anymore and the robotic arms drops the blanks on the floor ..

only 2 burners i had completly die had over 15,000 burns on them and over 25,000 hours on time (never turned off) ...

the older drives had a lot more heat but had good fans in them also ..

You must do a lot of burning to know the figure that acurate . Would be well pleased if things last that long on current dvd recorders. But out of intrest would not replacing the dvd drive unit itself solve a lot of problems upon breakdown or when bad or failed recording occur?.

    (sorry, couldn't resist)

I had a NEC1300 die on me...it stopped burning DVDs, it still played DVDs and played/burned CDs.

    basically, it'll start acting up.

Find a tall building, an empty parking lot, and throw it off the roof. Do not hurt anybody. But it is fun to watch electronics break. The fax scene in Office Space was great.

Why? BJ_M was right on the money. Inside every recorder is just another burner.

Thats pretty funny. Does that mean if someones DVD Recorder starts to act up...they can go out and buy any old off the shelf burner and stick it in their defective Recorder?

Easy if you know what you're doing. The IDE drives are easiest to replace.

    3. Be sure you have the correct firmware, and that it's the type of firmware that can mate with a recorder drive. Does not always apply.

my good old Panasonic DMR E20 dates from october 2001 and is stil going strong
main precaution: leave it really "free" standing so heat can dissipate

  29. My Panasonic DMR-E20 from November 2001 died in June, it quit finalizing discs. It had only seen medium usage, not like I used it every day. Fortunately I bought a 5 year warranty and ended up with the better JVC for free.
