Hi,
I am in the market for a new dvd player. I have a hdtv and was told that progressive dvd players work VERY well in quality. I then read about the DVI player tha Samsung has. The dvd player I currently use, utilizes component cables (around $80) that makes the picture quality suberb, even on my crappy dvd player.
What exactly is DVI (better than progressive?) and do I need new wires/cables to hook it up to my hdtv? Is it a better image quality than regular progressive dvd players that use my component cables?
Anyone know anything on the Samsung dvd player? I cant really find any Sony dvd players that have the same features.
Here is the link.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lots of discussion threads about all things home theater... including much opinion about the available DVI enabled DVD players out there. -
Hey guy, I have one of those players hooked up to my TXM3298HF Tantus HDTV....it looks great, however, I find it hard to notice the difference between the DVI and the component video. Maybe it's just me, but I can't tell the difference...don't get me wrong; my combination makes for an incredible picture! Just make sure your TV has DVI input if you plan on using it....DVI is just a way for the DVD player(or any source) to send the data in pure digital form, bypassing any converting, which in turn, is supposed to give you a better picture. You do need a new cable, they can be pricy, luckily my DVD player included it. Hope this helps

With direct view CRT's, the difference between upscaled component input and DVI is difficult to see. The DVI is noticeably better for fixed pixel displays (DLP, LCD, plasma, etc.)

yes, it is true that i cannot see the difference b/t the DVI and the componenet cables on my Sony kv34hs510 crt model. They look identical to me.

That's because direct-view HDTV sets usually scan 480p sources at 480p without scaling. The fixed-pixel displays need to rescale 480p to 720p or 768p and it's better to use the scaler in the DVD player rather than in the TV because better results are yielded when the rescaling is performed before the DAC (digital to analog conversion) takes place.

i have two HD931 's at work and liked it so much i bought one for home hooked up to a direct view CRT HDTV (which plays 720p and 1080i both) and that has the HDCP DVI connection ..
i have a pionner rp82 (considered one of the best ever pictures) also hooked up and it looks better than the samsung with YUV ... but the samsung looks better with the DVI ..
the HD in the samsung ONLY works out of the DVI output .. but now there is a HD941 that replaces the 931.."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650)
