  1. Ease of use with out having to read a hard badly written manuel is important. it also has to work real well or i'll wait for them to improve.

I'm just copying SVHS tapes, and Hi 8, there already edited, plus I'll be copying some new cable TV shows

    what's the best format disc to use, R - R+ - R- , what's the difference ?

Do the the units that do have a built in Hard Drive also have built in editing software, can you add editing software of your own?

  2. I am a panasonic (panny) fan and have used the E20 and E30 for moving VHs over to DVD. look for a user by the name of lordsmurf, who I believe did an indepth analysis of the various recorders out there. The pre-E50 model had 4-6 inputs including Svideo (no firewire though), which is great if you are pulling from multiple places. The panny's that I am familair with all record to -R and ram (I use ram to do the initial recording, then use TMPGENC DVD Author on my computer and burn the output). I just picked up another ram 5 pack (movers lost my other set) at wallyworld for $18 (with cases). The panny has 4 modes, XP(1 hr), SP(2 hr), LP (4 hr), and EP (6 hr). I would only use 1 or 2 hour.

Some of my previous posts earlier this year go talk about what I do in my small business to convert home movies to DVD.

He is looking for a easy to use DVD recorder. IMO, no DVD recorder can now beat LiteOn LVW5001/LVW5005 on that aspect. LiteOn DVD recorders are intuitive to use.

Are the LiteOn dvd recorders reliable, can they record on discs< i guess that means -R that most other people can play on their DVD player, do they have very good picture quality. The ease of use part sounds great, is there any drawbacks.

  5. The JVC DR-M10 is probably the best DVD recorder for the money right now. Go back to the DVD Recorder forum and have a look at the various threads... most DVD recorder brands and models are discussed in depth:

LiteOn LVW5001 only records with +R/+RW discs. LVW5005 records with all +/- discs and CD-R CD-RWs. PQ is good.

    Drawbacks:
There are quite a number. For a simple to use DVD recorder, these draw backs DO NOT affect most users and only video experts will not be happy with these draw backs. Goto LiteOn discussion forums if you really want to know the details.

  9. Much better is the DVD WRITER topic on left column, believe it or not, that's also where the dvd recorder comment section is, along with what media to use. So search it for Panasonic. Sure, an e30 is great but you can't buy it anymore. So how about an e55?

  10. I also like the DVD Writer (and other) ratings and comments section very much, but there is a built-in lag with the information compiled. The top rated recorder is no longer available and the newer units, like the JVC, have very few comments yet. Also, sometimes items or brands that sell well tend to get higher numbers of positive reviews, making it seem like the sales leader is the better product. The forum threads are more up-to-the-minute, IMHO. Bottom line is both areas are important to review.

I've owned somewhere betwee 17-25 units. I've not really bothered to leave comments in the review section here. Takes up too much time.

  12. I agree, there is nothing better then the discussions on the threads. It's funny but I see certain users always guiding other users to the left of this page and never really giving their opinion on the matter.

Oh and by the way I just picked up the Sony RDR-GX300 recorder. I started a new thread on it.
