I'm trying to capture a VHS tape to the PC with Adobe Premiere 6.5. Or what is a good program to capture with?

I was just wondering if there are any methods to instantly capture as mpeg and a smaller size? Because it just ends up as AVI and the file size is way too big. 38 minutes is over 8 GIGS!

Try Mainconcept MPEG Encoder, does a great job from DV to MPEG1 or 2 for burning to VCD / CVD or DVD. (need a fast machine .... 2+Ghz

Or, look for a MPEG hardware capture product (ADStech, Happauge, etc)

Oh, but that's just like TMPGEnc right? Because I can encode the DV AVI to MPG with TMPGEnc. But I was wondering if it's possible to capture directly to MPG, or change a setting to directly compress more so that it doesn't end up being GIGS for just a 10 minute video.

    I have a Pinnacle DV500 DVD.

You can't capture to Mpeg. You can do what looks like that however.
you can encode to mpeg2 during the capture instead of later.
Mainconcept will supposedly do that on a fast machine.
I have an ATI which will also do it.

  5. You can try Power VCR from Cyberlink. It also encodes during capture. You need a fast machine!

    Good look

I have an AMD 64 3200+ 2.2 GHZ and 1 gig of ram. I'll try that software. I also have an ATI card.

Namie, can you tell us what kind of ATI card you have. Most of them have built in video inputs that can feed from your VHS deck. Also, ATI has the ability to capture directly to MPEG in several formats. Your PC has plenty of power to do all of this.

However, if you are really serious about working with video, there are other ways to do this. Your goal was to get your 10 minutes of video on the PC in a smaller size. That is easy to do,... but what then. What are you going to do with it. I assume you want to make some kind of DVD or SVCD, or just a VCD,... but what then.

We need to know more about what you want to do.
"Technology",...It's what keeps us all moving forward.
