I was looking at a Blue Flame 5000FS at B&H ....

What makes this 4x the price of a ADVC-300? Even $500 more than the ADVC-500. Heck, the ADVC-1000 is about the same price as the Laird, and it has SDI.
What is a Laird going to do with a rotten signal?
Thanks

Well .....
Maybe I'll have a conversation with myself .
I got the Laird ....
It ignores copy protection.
It seems to handle a poor signal well. I feed it a messed up old Disney tape. It locked onto the signal and gave about 1 frame glitches on the bad parts.
I guess I'll test the audio sync, and maybe some resolution/color compares to other devices I have.
It's nice that it has 44.1 and 48k audio, incase I want to make svcd/vcd ... -
That's a lot of money.

Actually, I got it used for ~$300. I was surprized when I started to poke around, at how cheap you can get old studio stuff. I guess with the changes in digital happening so fast, the value of the old stuff goes down fast. The unit I got does not have component or SDI. I assume the pro's like that.
BJ_M has a Laird 5500 or 6000 I think.
I'm now on the hunt for a good studio monitor. 1st I want to find out what is good. I've seen some $1500 retail ones going for $150 on ebay.
PS: I noticed how the views on this topic really went up after you posted. -
I did some tests, and the Laird has some problems with low colors. I'm going to see if I can get it serviced. An adjustment might help.
Bottom line, Colors are low on the laird. Resolution is the best on the Laird. Noise is the worst on the Laird. This last may well be due to the dvd player and cables that I used (aka noise from my source).
I posted my test at Doom9. So go there for the full text.

But here are some pics:

This next pic compares the DVD direct to the laird -vs- thru a cheap 4x1 svideo switch I have. Shows what cheap stuff can do.
