Im going to take the plunge and buy one of the above recorders and i would like views on which one,
What is swinging me to either of these machines is the fact they have inbuilt TBCs which would help me as i plan to convert a number of home videos

The TBCs in those machines do almost nothing. May as well not even exist.
The JVC has much better video quality is makes perfect files.
Panasonic has blocky image quality and makes corrupt AC3 sometimes, which causes sync trouble when editing.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

I own both. A Panasonic E50 and the JVC DR-M10. The JVC makes a better looking MPEG2 recording with less video noise. It also records to DVD-RW's in standard Video format, which is a major advantage over the Panasonic when it comes to trimming and authoring the MPEG2 (VOB) files to a final DVD-R with your computer.
