  1. Been looking at the details for this machine & on here & I cant seem to find anything that mentions weather of not it will accept & record onto DVD-RW discs?.

I'd feel hard done by if I was to buy this machine where the only re-writable disc I could use is DVD-Ram, which wont read in my old Pioneer A-05 in my pc.

Surely if it records to DVD-R it should also record to DVD-RW too?.

  2. Writes to dvd-r not dvd-rw. DVD-Ram way better, 100,000 writes per disk.

I doubt that the DMR-E55 can record on DVD-RW.

I only have experience with the DMR-E30 and on this recorder you can only record on DVD-R and DVD-RAM but you are able to play prerecorded DVD-videos produced on a DVD-burner in a PC from DVD-RW even though this is not mentioned in the users manual. If you try to record on a blank DVD-RW the recorder freezes, you have to electrically disconnect the recorder and then switch it on by pushing on the eject button to be able to get rid of the DVD-RW again.

I use DVD-RAM together with a compatible DVD-ROM-drive (LG GRD-8182) to read a recording on a PC and further process it.

  5. I seems to be having trouble finding a dvd drive here in the UK that wil;l read RAM discs.

Please dont tell me I'm gonna need a complete new DVD writer in order to do so!. Wander if a firmware update for my Pioneer A-05 will allow it to read RAM discs?.

  6. Panasonic makes them. I have a LF-d521. It was about $70 from amazon.com 2 years ago. It reads & writes them.

You should find the readers at ebay.com in your country. There should be a list of dvdram writers on left column under dvd writers.

Is there any likelyness of a future firmware update to allow the recording onto -rw?. I've never really looked into dvd reccorders before the last couple of weeks so I'm not familiar with the history of -rw with past Panasonic recorders.

Out of intrest is there a reason why the Panasonic recorders dont support -rw as a recordable option?. Seems crazy they left support out with this new model when Sony & JVC of similar specs do suport -rw for a similar price.

Does this model therefor have any feature that could persudae me to buy it over similar priced JVC & Sony models?. Think the others also do VBR recording dont they?.

  8. Before you decide on the Panasonic, have a look at the JVC DR-M10. It records to DVD-RW's (in your choice of standard DVD-Video or VR format) and DVD-RAM (VR only). The JVC has effective pre-encoding enhancement and noise filtering circuits that the Panasonics do not have. I own both (an E50, last year's E55; and the JVC unit) and the JVC makes a better looking, less noisy MPEG2 recording.

Also, if you plan on trimming and re-authoring on your computer, using finalized DVD-RW's recorded in DVD-Video format (.VOB files) is faster and easier to deal with.

Both machines are good, but I have to give the JVC the edge because of the DVD-RW capability and the cleaner recordings.

  9. Chears m8 pretty much made my mind up to go for quality over the cheaper Liteon 5001 or the Yamada DVR8000. Meaning it's gonna be the E55.

Could have gone for the JVC which on some sites is slightly cheaper than the E55. But want to buy local for the reason of less hassle & cheaper to take back if the thing breaks down. And I dont think the JVC is available localy.

I'm in the US and had to get my JVC online as it is not locally available yet. Mine is working flawlessly so far and I got a great deal on it. But I totally understand about wanting to be able to return an electronics purchase easily if you have problems...

Most LG- and I think also LiteOn-DVD-ROM-drives are capable to read DVD-RAM. These drives are available in Germany in many shops.
The older Toshiba-DVD-ROM-drives used to be DVD-RAM-compatible but since the MD-1802 they are incompatible.

On Win-XP you do not require any special DVD-RAM-driver as far as I know.
