I've imported one big avi in my project. Premiere says you can hide tracks and just render the ones you want. But I'm having a little trouble. I dropped my avi into the timeline and then cut it into 2 parts. So now I have one big avi on my timeline, but I've used the razor to cut it into 2 parts. I really only want to export the first section. I've tried everything to hide the second section, but everytime I go to export to mpg, it renders everything. When it gets to the end of the first clip, the second clip is just black. Do I need to divide up my one big avi file into several smaller ones to be able to hide some of them, or am I doing something wrong. The reason I'm wanting to do this is because I would like to have one timelime for my first home movie tape. I'm wanting to make one dvd from this tape. I was hoping I could hide/shy every segment but say the first segment, and export it as clip1.mpg. Then hide clip one and show segment 2, and only export clip2.mpg. So on and so on instead of having to import the main avi, cutting out everything except what I need export it, then have to start all over again. I could also save the whole timeline as 1 file. Sorry for being so long winded.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're final goal is with multiple clips. I think the problem you're running into, though, is, even though you have set one track to be "shy", Premiere Pro still calculates it into the length of the video. Since the layer is shy, it renders black video. I don't see any setting in the Adobe Media Encoder to say "render just the length of this track" or "render only the work area."
This "shy" feature, I believe, is so you can turn off "overlay" tracks -- titles, and things like that -- tracks that are above one another. It sounds like your two tracks are one right after the other.
I think you'd be much better off splitting your clips into different timelines and rendering them that way or using markers if you're just wanting to create chapter points.
Is there a reason you want multiple clips for your final product? Are you rendering them at different settings? -
I think you're making things more difficult than need be...
If you want to simply encode the first cut part, without going into the second half, simply drag your "WORK AREA" bar for the required distance..your work area bar should be just below your zoom adjustment on the top of the timeline..
If your "work area" is off screen due to extreme zoom, then ALT+click, and it'll be there..Drag the handles to precisely where you want them..
After that, then when you export, there should be an option of "whole project", or "work area"...Pick the second one..
Good luck!!! -
I was hoping I could hide/shy every segment but say the first segment, and export it as clip1.mpg. Then hide clip one and show segment 2, and only export clip2.mpg.

Thanks all of you. I'm going to try all your suggestions. The reason for all this is because when I make my DVD, the menu I'm making, I want a button for every occasion. In this one big avi I have, I have Christmas 2000, Easter 2000, and several other occasions. I want a button on my menu for each of these. So I was wanting to export smaller clips from my bigger clip so I could attach them individually to each of my buttons. Thanks again to everyone.
