stupid nero thinks the mpeg file is 100 minutes even though the file size is only 760mb and complains the data won't fit on the blank CD I put in.
on smaller files, it seems to work, say I have a 20MB file that is 3 minutes long, same mpeg1 vbr, when nero burns it, it knows it is 20mb and times shows up as 2 minutes.
it seems like on longer files, the movie time overides the file size.
so I wonder how Sefy is able to burn his 90 minute vbr movies on 80 minute CDRs using Nero ?
I am using 5.5.4.0 nero.

Nero never looks at the time of the mpg it always goes by the size. It just shows you how much space it takes up in "time" because I guess its easier to visualize.
You are burning on 80 min media right? because 760MB wont fit on a regular cdr without overburning so nero would be correct in saying that the file is too big. Its possible that nero is somehow misreading your file but can't you just tell it to burn anyway even if it says it wont fit? If nero truly is misreading the file then the burn will be fine. -
I've had the same problems from time to time.Mine was with VBR Mpeg2 though. I've demuxed the audio and video and re-encoded the video and then multiplexed them back together and it worked. I can't say it works all the time. I switched from the TMPGENC 12a to the 12J version. I read something on the unofficial TMPGENC homepage that the 12a version vbr isn't right. It's frustrateing and you're not alone. Sefy's theory does work I've put an 88 min movie on an 80 min cd and 82 min on a 74min cd with svcd format and they both played fine. If you figure it out I'd love to hear how you did it. Where there is a will there is a way.

Just in case u havent, try turning off the compliant check thingy in nero, and then try again.
Just a thought -
thanks for the replies.
yes I am using 80 minute CDR and yes I have turned off compliant option (otherwise I would not get to the point where I am ready to burn).
I tried it on another movie right now, the file size is 743MB, time is 102 minutes. when I burn, nero shows it is 84:42 minutes movie, size 744MB, then ejects my CDR media and pops up a windows saying there is not enough space to burn, insert another medium...
I'll try the demux and remux and see what happens.
my comment about sefy is not that it does not work, but about the part where he says all you need to do with nero is turn off compliant, which is what I did, but nero seems to be going by the play time, not the file size on my setup. -
You can try 'forcing' Nero to burn the video...
When the CDR get ejected and prompts "Not Enough Space", simply push back in that same CDR and it will ask you to Overburn (Overburn mode must be enabled in the Preferences). If your video is really under a 80min, it should burn out fine.. if not, I dunno what would happen... -

If your file really is too big for the media and you manage to get the program to burn it anyway then you'll burn straight through the TOC and eventually get an error. The disk will be completely unreadable and unplayable without a TOC. -
Use VCDImager to make an image of the MPEG, then burn it. You'll want to use VCDImager GUI, TSCV, etc. to make life easier.

That's the problem with Nero, if it's not exactly acording to the MPEG standard it wants to burn it with 2048 bytes/sector instead of 2352 bytes/sector, so you only can fit 700MB on a 80min CD. I don't know how you can fix this with Nero. If you burn a CD with 2352 bytes/sector you can fit 800MB on a 80min CD.
If you burn data on a CD, you burn it with 2048 bytes/sector, the other 304 bytes are used for error correction data. -
Hi!
You should select "MPEG-1 Video CD (Non standard)" at Settings/System in TMPGENC before encode every file that isn't VCD standard.
I hope it helps you.

Rafael is 100% correct. Nero is not as stupid as you think. Just make sure you process the AVI as non-standard and everything will work sweet. You can also just run your current non-working AVI's straight through TMPGENC's mpg tool (merge & cut) to convert the movie to non-standard if its incorrectly stuck on automatic or something else. Just cut the movie from start to end as one chunk, making sure you select non-standard in the selection box.

Thanks for the help !! It now works !!
Rafael and Tnuro and Peter have the correct explanation for the problem and the fix. I had set my video in tmpegenc to mpeg1 vbr only, not mpeg1 non standtard vcd. So Peter's comment explained exactly why I am getting the longer time, because it is burned as 2048 data per sector, not raw 2353 (that explains why my 102 minutes movie that is about 740mb long is being burned by nero as 84 minutes so it won't fit the cdr media 740x2352/2048=849mb).
so I edited the file with tmpegenc again and specified the output as mpeg1 vcd non standard and nero took it like it should and plays on my DVD player!!
Thanks to the group!! -
I've been looking high and low for this answer for about a month now...I finally got my search word combination right today I guess! Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this thread.
