Just checking out video studio 8 and i noticed the default choice is dv 2. Which is the better choice and why?

  2. I've only done DV one time but I think type 2 is more compatible with things like virtualdub. Maybe something to do with the audio as well. Look up panasonic DV codec under tools. I think that's where I found the explanation....

Virtualdub can't pull the audio out of DV type 1 because it is interleaved with the video. TMPGenc can read DV type1 just fine, but if you want to filter/edit etc. the file in VD you need type 2. Check the tools section for a tool to convert between the two types - they're virtually the same except for how the audio is interleaved (or not). The video/audio quality should be exactly the same for both types.

One is neither better or worse. As fmctm1sw said, it's more a matter of compatibility with the software you will use to process the DV file. TMPGEnc and Virtualdub like type 2. Some other editing, encoding programs work with type 1 instead. Look under 'DV' in the 'Glossary' to the left for a better explanation.

Thanks, will do. Re: Tmpgenc, I've been using it to encode dv-1 with what seems to be no problem. What doesn't it like? Am I not getting the best quality from my mpegs?
