ok, before you guys tell me to use the search, i already did. i found out how big of a pain it is to convert pal to ntsc, but I got canopus procoder because i heard it can pretty much convert it with a click of a button.
my main reason for this post is this question:
when converting from dvd, what format should i convert to in order to keep all the quality and allow me to convert back to dvd easily? (dvd i am trying to convert is already on 1 dvd+r)
also, i'm a bit confused about something... is there any way to convert to dvd mpeg2 or is that just called SVCD?
i've tried following sefy's dvd backup guide using dvd2svcd but it didnt work for some reason. it took 6 hours to encode and then something happened and the only part of the video left was the first 10min.

i need help again. freaking canopus procoder keeps crashing after about 10 minutes of encoding... it shows one of those ''please tell microsoft about this problem'' errors with a send report button...
anyone know what could be wrong? -
Sounds like you are trying to do the "tricky" PAL to NTSC conversion without even understanding the basics of re-encoding WITHOUT all the problems of doing PAL to NTSC conversion.
Perhaps you need to read and test somemore.
I could offer help with PAL to NTSC but I prefer to use AviSynth and CCE. I also know how to do it with TMPGEnc but I never used ProCoder so can't help you there.

From my personal experience conversions with procoder give rather low quality, soft and fuzzy outcome. Tested it once on several pieces and never looked back. Seems like Vegas gives a sharper image so that would be a better choice in my opinion. Test it thoroughly on a small excerpt and verify results, may not be what you are looking for.
