  1. I've had a Philips DVDR75 for a long time. Met my requirements when I bought it, but would like to get better encoding quality that some of the newer recorders seem to offer - particularly for times beyond the 2hr mark.

I'm interested in the JVC-DRM10, but the only thing that is making me hesitate is the lack of an RGB input. I'd have to get a RGB>S-Video converter - my cable box is only Composite or RGB, although I may well move to Sky+ (I'm in the UK) in the future which I believe has an S-Video output onboard.

I've seen S-Video described as slightly inferior to RGB, but would be interested to hear what people think about its quality in the real world. Am I going to notice a quality drop, or are there so many other factors affecting video quality here (e.g. quality of recorder's encoder chip, pre-processors, encoding for cable/satellite transmission etc) that the S-Video vs RGB issue is largely academic?

i have a freeview PVR with RGB and Svideo outputs - there's no difference between the two. My DVD player also has S and RGB, the diference is subtle, but does exist.

So for TV recording RGB isn't a neccesity.

(In my opinion, before someone tells me i'm wrong!)

I don't do this myself, but I've seen projects both ways. I can't tell. Talking analog sources here.

  4. Thanks for the replies - your opinions are valued. GUess there's no reason for me to hang back....although I must admit the model with HDD looks tempting.....

Just need to do a bit of work convincing somebody why I need to spend a few hundred quid on replacing a piece of kit that's working perfectly ok! 8)

ahh, new kit + wife = headache?

try disguised kit + wife = no problem, although look out for the credit card bill variable, can have unpredictable results!
