I've been out of comics for a long time but if you're into superhero fare, check out stuff written by Brian Michael Bendis. He's probably the most prolific writer working today. He writes for a bunch of Marvel books as well as Image and DC.

If you're into darker, more brooding stuff check out just about any of the DC Vertigo line. I can't recommend Neil Gaiman's Sandman enough. The book concluded years ago but you can find lots of the story arcs in trade form. They're all pretty much self-contained so you don't have to worry about continuity stuff. My favorite is Season of Mists. I'd also recommend just about anything written by Garth Ennis, and Peter Milligan too. Some of the best stuff is written by Brits these days, and has been for a long time.

As you can tell I'm not particularly drawn to comics for the art. There are some really incredible artists working in comics but it's the writing that is the nuts and bolts of the entire medium. I'll settle for less than spectacular art when it's coupled with great writing, but never vice versa.

    I agree!

    Kabuki - David Mack
Midnight Nation - JM Strazinski (sp?)
Rising Stars (even though the writer and publisher or being ******** about the last 3 issues, more than 2 years past do)
    Kissing Chaos
    Dead@17
SteamPunk (sadly stopped before writing volume 3, had to pay the bills)
    Violent Messiahs

Notice: There really aren't any spandex clad SuperHeroes in the titles I mention, exception of some characters in Rising Stars.

I grew up reading and collecting, and I still do it to a small extent.

Stuff that still holds up for me...

    - X-Men - the John Byrne run (108-143)
    - Daredevil - the Frank Miller runs (158-190 & 226-234)
    - Miracleman - Alan Moore / Alan Davis / Steve Bissette / John Totleben
    - Fantastic Four - the John Byrne run (I'm sensing a pattern here...)
    - Doomsday +1
    - Hellboy
    - Watchmen
    - V For Vendetta - best. comic. ever.
    - Batman : The Dark Night Retuns, DK2 and Arkham Asylum
    - Sin City

haven't read a lot of stuff that's come out recently, although I just bought a long box full off eBay of mostly new stuff, so I'm going to reacquaint myself with the state of the art.

    I fear it's a dying medium, though....

I'm kicking myself for not mentioning that before. What a great cycle of books those were. I'm looking forward to the movie being co-directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller.

I'm right there with you. It's an absolute shame because there is a lot of really exceptional storytelling in comics.

Ok fine, I came to the correct topic, everyone happy now!

Never read any Neil Gaiman but the other day I thought about gettting the back issues of Dead@17, that is until I saw how much #1 is going for. I just love how years from now it will not be that bad, but because something is popular the price of the early ones that are just a few months old inflates.

I've actaully been enjoying a marvel book called NYX but its one of those problem prone on and off again, and always delayed titles. its been so haphazard I dont have great hope for it longevity.

Also as stated in the other thread be sure to find and check out Supreme power even if you just pick up the 1st graphic novel. That comic rules, spandex or not heh. Beside its written by JMS (creator of Babylon 5)

  9. I used to be heavy into collecting but, at the end of the 80's I stopped. Had my fill of multi cover, embossed, over extended, diluted crap they churned out.

Did we realy need 4 Spiderman comics? How about just one great one.

    Probably just me.
Don't give in to DVD2ONE, that leads to the dark side.

  10. Whats a good one to collect these day? I think the collectors bust of the 90's is about done.

Its funny, most of the stuff isn't that collectable it seems. Almost everything from the late 80s early 90s that I collected back when is almost worthless.

I'm not reading again for the collecting aspect, but because I enjoy it. Of course once you have a stack you tend to go get some bags and boxes, and the next thing you know you ARE technically collecting.

I'm more trying to find just good comics then comics that are going to be worth money.

  13. That's what I meant by the collectors bust. None of those comics (late 80's - 90's) are ever going be worth a shit. There's too many of them...

Cool! That's what I'm looking for. Something I can start with a first edition. Who knows maybe someday....

Get surpreme power, its only on Issue 11 and the story rock. Pick up the graphic novel to save some cash (it has the first 6 in it)

Also that one I was talking about, I have the issue zero (still on stands AFAIK) and here is some example art. No clue how good the actual book is going to be yet.

Where do I buy them? Located a really cool comic book store near where I work.

I thought the same thing... but then saw the date stamp on his submission. Confusion may be because another Comic book thread was started a few days back
