  1. Hello -

I just bought an IC7 MAX3 mobo and a 3.2 Northwood and I'm building a system around it from the ground up. My problem is that I format the hard drive using the Windows XP disc and then it transfers a bunch of files after I agree to the EULA. Then it says it will reboot and continue the XP install. When it reboots it asks me to format the drive again and gives me the EULA again! This will go on over and over if I keep following XPs instructions. I only have a video card and 1 hard drive hooked up at the moment.Should I be formating from a floppy instead of the XP disc? Do I need to update the BIOS before I do anything with Windows? Am I just stupid? Any help will be greatly appreciated!
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

  2. When it reboots, you need to let it boot off the HD, not the CDROM. That sounds like the problem to me anyway.

Check how your boot sequence is set in your bios. when installing it first needs to boot from CD, but after the first restart it needs to boot from the HDD.

  8. OK - I'm jacking my thread back! Thanks for the info guys but I need a little carification: Should I eject the CD during the reboot so the machine boots from the hard drive? I have installed XP Home several times on 2 different machines and never had any problems like this. Is XP Pro the culprit?

Check the boot order in the Bios settings as Flan suggested. It should be CD first, then HD.

Normally what happens with an XP boot CD is you put the CD in and switch on the PC. When it boots it asks if it should boot from the CD or the HD. Answer to boot from CD (might be 1 or 2, can't remember) 1st time. Normally if you don't answer it defaults to HD. If yours doesn't work this way, ejecting the CD at re-boot time may be the answer. Put it back as soon as the PC has booted as the installation still seems to need it.

  10. Thanks much! I'll give it a shot when I get home from work! It's awfully frustrating to do all the research into what components to buy, waiting for all the parts to show up on your doorstep, and assemble all those parts just to be greeted with a silly problem that keeps the whole thing from coming together!

Worst case you can download a six floppy xp pro install (boot) set from MS site.

that way, in case your cd does not boot properly or you are using a back up cd, you have an alternative way of installing os.... You still need the CD to complete the install... this is only for boot / driver / os start up.

  13. No,

I just did this last night. Leave the disk in because XP setup will go back and reference it several times during the build. (And I did the same thing too - booted from the CD a second time )

My install said 'hit any key to boot from CD', if you leave it alone, it should boot from C:

  14. Also,

Go to www.blackviper.com and follow the post installation guide. He recommends turning off (disabling) several XP processes that suck up resources and delivers nothing in return. Very well written.....
