.... it's 1:30 here and I have managed to do absolutely nothing at work for the last 6 hours....

It's Friday, I was off the last two days, my workload is pretty thin this week, so my plan was to clean up a couple of "easy jobs" and call it a week.... so far, I have been able to keep myself 'busy' with everything else but what I'm here for.....

...anyone else feel this way today?

I need to work all weekend to catch up on a project, yet today, all I have done so far is refresh latest posts here and make lame ass posts!

Since I work in the video field, I guess this could be considered research...except for the time spent in Off Topic...

Just no real motivation today. The weekends are quiet in the office, maybe I can get some work done then....

  4. Just came home from a night out and definitely looking forward to wasting most of tomorrow.

Only got 2 hours of sleep last night due to exams then I've been out with friends to 4am in the morning so tomorrow I am not waking up before 1pm in the afternoon.

I came back from summer school about an hour ago and I have to go to work in an hour...after which I'm going to a party. Definitely not a waste of a day for me.

I have many days like that. I try to multitask between post-whoring and CAD, writing specs, and researching older radar designs. Some days the only thing I accomplish is that I bumped up my post count by 50 or 100.

Other days are so busy at work I log in here and have to leave it for a while, come back and log in again, spend five minutes reading, then get called away again. Then get back to a ringing phone and they need me on the third floor. It's almost like work on those days

Doesn't my boss know how annoying that is when I get distracted from the OT forum for some mundane work-related task? :P

That's why I love my job. I can F/O most of the day here, then go home and write code after the kiddie goes to sleep. I've written some of my best stuff at 2:30 AM!

edit -- As long as they don't start tracking my bandwith usage....

the company I work for just revoked three paid holidays from us this week, so I'm sort of not in a hurry to get anything done at this point... couple that with having the last two days off and the next two days off, and my iniative just went down the crapper.

Oh, the three days they decided that it was more important for our asses to be in here: Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and New Years Eve.

(Christmas and New Years fall on a Saturday this year, so we would have had off Christmas eve and New Years eve)

Guess I'll be using those PTO days this year!!

Remember the Y2K farce???? At the company I worked for, anyone who demanded vacation time from Thanksgiving 1999 - Easter 2000 were given all the vacation days they could ever use! I still got out of it though. My father-in-law died 12/28/99 and the funeral was 1/3/00. Luckily, all the new code worked!

Ok, I guess I'll bite.....Sooo northcat, how are you enjoying your summer vacation? Unfortunately, I can't plan vacations for the same time every year, so I have to take the time off where I can.

Now, I get paid the same whether I work 2 hours a day or 20 hours. I have a project schedule that I must meet in order to continue receiving paychecks. Don't meet it? Gone! Of course, mind you I don't get any input into that schedule, that is usually done by people who are paid far more and know far less. Ok, I digress....How exactly am I draining the economy? I am paid, partly for what I know, and partly to produce a working product within a set schedule. If I know how to do it, and meet the schedule, I have earned my pay. Period. I spend many of my personal hours doing research, reading trade mags, learning latest trends and new languages, etc. So, if I recoup a little of that time during "work" hours, we are still not quite even.

I do not have a "scheduled" work day. I have a master schedule which is usually a moving two month window. Get it done, or get going. Simple enough. We're adults. Deliver your commitments on time, no one is watching over your shoulder. In my company, we work smarter, not harder. The CEO, the CTO, the investors all agree the way we work ....works! Don't screw with it!

  15. Teaching is a bloody hard job. No way I could do it. In comparison, a lot of jobs are cushy.

Where would we be without teachers? Surely a lot happier, but then ignorance is said to be bliss. Could any of you do your jobs without maths?

    @tekkieman -
Summer vacation is going well. My son plays a lot of baseball, so I spend a great amount of time at the ball park. It is safe to say that I'm not exactly working myself into an early grave out here, unless I happen to fall out of the boat and drown...drinking and fishing isn't exactly a high stress situation I like to fish for channel cat, so you know, put the leech on the hook, cast it out there and sit back and watch the poles

Easy there, I just threw the "drain on the economy" comment in there to insure reaction :P

Well, like I said, noone was biting, so I took it upon myself to do so. In all honesty, when I have days where I don't need to work hard, I sorta feel guilty. But, when the 20 hour days start, I get over it real quick! As Cobra pointed out, I wouldn't be where I am today without teachers, so hats off to you guys!

Enjoy the fishing. I wish I could, but I've missed the best part of bass season here. Need to wait until fall now.

If you look in my profile you'll see what's been listed as "occupation" since the day I joined here. I wear the handle proudly, and have nightmares thinking about the scenario where I would have to actually work for a living again.

I would be the first one to make the argument that teachers are the hardest-working members of our society, and I think you guys are criminally underpaid. Our society dropped the ball with teachers. Compared to you, yes, I am a slacker. Most of us here are

And people wonder why kids end up in gangs and can't spell when they leave HS. If we paid our teachers more than what we pay our garbage men, maybe things would be different :P

  22. Also, bring back tougher rules in schools, and give teachers the power to belt a misbehaving little brat a shot over the head.

From what I saw in secondary school, a lot of the problems with learning and stress to teachers is caused by a few individuals who are disruptive, and the teacher can't even get rid of them - that would be discrimination since they all seem to have "learning/social difficulties" that excuse their behaviour...

  23. Hey, I'm not a slacker! I put in a GREAT amount of effort at work to disguise my SLACKING as work. Anyone who thinks that it's easy looking EXTREMELY BUSY and PRODUCTIVE while actually DOING NOTHING, can KISS MY ASS/ARSE !!!

You don't know what hard work is until you've masqueraded as working for as many years as I have!!

It's not just about me and my life-long dream of doing nothing ...

@Ripper - been there...I spend more energy being lazy than I would if I just did what I should in the first place. For example, carrying in Groceries...I'll have 5 or 6 bags on each arm, trying to carry the gallon of milk in my hand and two 12 packs of pop in my other hand while trying to balance the bag of dog food between my hands and arms when if I would just make 2 trips it would take half the energy and I wouldn't have to stop halfway and pick up things I've dropped.

Same thing taking out the trash cans...we have 3 trash cans and one smaller trash container...I am bound and determined to take all 4 out at the same time when it is actually a 40 ft drag and 2 trips would be much easier.

@Cobra & Capmaster - I do agree we are underpaid. Seeing how if each one of my 165 kids would give me 2 dollars a day for class (50 minutes...so $2 an hour per kid) it would be a 33% raise Our kids only have 7 classes so for a single student that would be 14 dollars a day and $70 a week for 36 weeks. $2520 a school year and that is only September thru the end of May. But come on, you can't expect parents to invest that kind of money in something like their kid's education. I really enjoy driving my 97 Tahoe with 128,000 miles on it and parking beside kids driving Escalades and Mercedes with spinners on them. What kind of priorities do you have

But remember...teaching is about helping young people...nurturing them, guiding them to be responsible young adults...who will eventually turn 18 at which time you can legally bust the teeth out of the little mother ******'s mouth like you wanted to do his junior year in your 3rd period Algebra 2 class....um...for example?....I've heard?....Gooooose-Fraaaaba....Goooooooose-Fraaaaaba :P :P

You can't put that kind of control back in the teacher's hands because today's kids would fight with the teacher. I remember fearing my teachers and especially the principal. In 2004 it is nothing to hear a student tell the principal to go **** himself. For students to be confrontational with teachers. Oh they get suspended but they don't give a shit. They are back in 3 days with the same attitude. I don't really have a problem with kids being confrontational with me...maybe it's because I'm 6'2" 225 with a shaved head, a loud bark and I look a little crazy, but I don't have those problems. Now the female teachers...that is an entirely different story. The kids just ignore them. Everyday I see a female teacher chasing some male student down the hall because he did something and he just ignores her, won't tell her his name, cusses her out. I'll be honest, I couldn't take it from them, you guys would be watching FOX news or the O'Reilly factor and hear "Ohio Teacher goes on Rampage...sends several students to hospital." (if I'm going to get fired, I might as well get my money's worth) Anyone standing in my face and says "**** you Mother ******" better be prepared to fight because I am going to fight and either he will fight back or he will take a beating, and I'll just find another profession. Keep it straight students...I was looking for a job when I found this one.

Sometimes you have to take into consideration the situation and not over react to some things. I've had kids get upset...not at me...and they are flying off the handle using "****" every other word. Sometimes you have to get the calmed down and see what the problem is....90% of the time, the language a kid uses to express anger is the language he hears his parents use to express theirs

Many times all I have to do with a problem student who is giving me a hard time is remind them that they will one day turn 18. I think that is assisted by my teaching in an area where I am "locally famous"...just about everyone knows me...but they know me from back in my 16-24 days when I was..um..lets just say....not as in control of my anger as I am now and consequences didn't matter back then. Kind of odd talking to a parent who knows you from 12 years ago as "that crazy bastard who was beating me with the cue stick". (embarassingly enough...that actually happened I felt bad about it 12 years later does that count?)

I have often theorized that if we were allowed to shoot just one student...the rest would be very well behaved. "James please sit down" "James could you take your seat please" BLAM BLAM BLAM..."anyone else need to sharpen their pencil?" :P :P :P (I'm kidding of course.. ..maybe )

I know many of you might find that hard to believe...but yes it is true...I was not always the peace loving gentle soul that you see here before you...I was once a violent sinner. I loved to drink. I loved to fight and I loved chasing big tits and sweet asses...but like many other men...all of that changed with 4 words...."I met this girl"

After much training by her and court ordered Anger Management couseling...I am much better now
